Only having small amount of food before workout in morning?

Hi

Can someone please answer this. If I only have a small amount of food before my weight training is it going to effect the gains I make?

I'm bulking and looking to make some good increases in muscle mass, but first thing in the morning I never feel hungry and it seems to take too long to get up, make myself eat, and then wait an hour before working out. I would much prefer to have something more simple and then get straight into my workout.

Would it be fine for me to have say a big glass or pure orange juice, some fruit and a protein shake, as opposed to oatmeal, and then workout about half an hour later? I'm sure I'd be getting a good amount of carbs+protein from that anyway??

Oh and I'll be eating a lot straight after the workout.

What do you think?

A simple carb 30min before you workout should be fine but i would try to get use to eating has soon as you get up. I was nearly my whole life not eating when i workup for hours sometimes. I wokeup this morning went to my trusty PC :) for 20 minutes or so and i was starved. Get use to it and it will become second natural.

well this morning i had a pint of pure orange juice, a protein shake and a banana then worked out about 30 mins later, and for some reason I had much more go in me than usual. I don't know if its anything to do with the food I ate but I could have gone for hours compared to how it normally is when I have a bowl of cereals and a protein shake. Maybe its because I had more carbs (simple) than usual??

finding what each of us respond best to is the key. there are many ideas, it just takes time to find the one that works for us.

when i train in the morning, i start sipping on a quick shake right when i get up and start training about 25 minutes later.

I recommend eating something before any hard workout. As you experienced, it gives you more energy and allows you to do more.

Part of the principle behind not eating before a workout in the morning is that your only real energy sources are muscle and body fat - and your body will target the body fat first since fat is a much higher-yield energy nutrient than protein. Otherwise, your body would rely first on carbohydrates for the majority of your workout. Downside to this is of course, you're likely to burn muscle as well as fat.

I haven't really had time to explore this concept, but I think I'll look into it a bit more over the next couple weeks.

personally, i dont care for the "cardio on an empty stomach" deal. i agree with those who say you should fuel the workout and refuel after. thats its more important about calories consumed vs burned over the course of the day over what you burn in and around a workout

when i tried it, i lost bodyweight. now i'm losing bodyfat. so i admit i'm biased :D

Here's something you might try-blend up your oatmeal and protein in the blender with milk or water and then you can hit the gym.
