I am 16, 5'9" and 190 pounds. I started the South Beach Diet on Monday and weighed exactly 200 pounds and have since lost 10 pounds. Is this healthy? This may be becuase I am only consuming 200-500 calories a day.

Suggestions needed.

Holy eat more food before you pass out batman!!! That is NOT healthy and you will most likely put every pound back on after you've 'stopped' the south beach diet. You're body is going to start thinking that it's starving, and yes it will eat away at your fat and make you loose weight (for a while) but in the end, any food that you do consume it will start storing it. Not a good thing. Eat more, exercise and go slow or else you're just wasting your time.

I can't exercise as much as I'd like becuase going to the gym is an inconvenience for my parents and I feel weird at there anyway. Maybe it's becuase I have a problem exercising in front of others. I have decided to start going to the lake near by and and walking around it a couple of times, everyday.

I'm concerned of my calorie intake too and starting tommorow I'll up it to 700-850. Is this better?

850 is better. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought that the average person should have a minimum of 1200 calories a day.... maybe someone can clue me in on that.

You need at least 1000 calories a day. AT LEAST! I suggest 1200 to lose weight healthily. Your walking plan sounds good. But don't forget there are other exercises to do at home too! Ride a bike, do lunges, squats, crunches, jumping jacks, etc. You can look online for exercises at home. Try fitness.com.
Just remember it is not always the quick fix that you need. Weight loss isn't just about what you look like, it's a lifestyle change and if you ever need support we are here!

I've read the south beach diet and the reason you only do the first week for one week is because it is so low in calories. You are supposed to consume so few to help cleanse your body. Then on phase two you only work in a few of the food items you ruled out in phase one. You stay on phase two (which is a much higher caloric intake than phase one) for as long as it takes you to reach your goal weight. When you complete phase two you enter phase three (the final stage) and learn to eat in moderation. So, if you enjoyed your first week of the South Beach Diet you should stay on it. It's perfectly healthy if you follow the rules. Look for phase two recipes online. Good Luck with the rest of your weight loss!

it is TOTALLY NOT okay to be only eating 200-500 calories a day.
That's like what? Two-five pieces of bread a day. There's NO WAY you'll have enough nutrients to last you. You need at least 1200 calories just to get the basic nutrients into your body.

If you don't want to go to a gym, that's fine. Take long walks or runs. Look at the other members here. Troutman runs about 4-5 miles everyday. M2M walks 2-5 miles every day. You can ride a bike for fun. Or dance in your room like me. Walk up and down the stairs. Do steps while watching tv. Not eating is not a solution. And it might help you lose weight for a few days but your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will decrease making it even harder for your body to lose weight.

Also the South Beach diet, yes, it is typical to lose 10 pounds within the first week... That's because it's such a shock to your body and u're mainly losing water weight.

hmmm

During the first 2 weeks of the South Beach diet one should only lose 8-13 pounds, so 10 pounds in the 4th day is a little crazy, I suppose.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions and I think I'll definetly start eating 850 calories a day, rather than starve myself, but really, that's as high as I'll go. I know a quick fix isn't healthy but desperate times call for desperate measures. I am sick of being a size 12. I'm really dumb, I ought to have started the diet in June, rather than for August.

I know I shouldn't be losing weight for such superficial reasons, and should be doing this as a lifestyle change but I'd be lying if I said that I am not doing this to be thin.

I'm really desperate and I'm just trying to see if it is possible to lose 38 pounds before school (sept 5th).

Here is a time log of my weight and height since the elementary and how my weight has spiraled out of control:

5th grade:

5'2" and 95

6th grade[.b]

5'5" and 113 pounds as of the first couple of months but than after frequent visits to the school a-la-carte I became 157 by June.

7th grade

5'7" and 175 pounds

8th grade

5'8" and 180

9th-10th grade

My weight pretty much stays between 180-189

11th grade

I was still in the 80 range but that was becuase I wasn't eating school lunch, than I began eating the regular caf meals and by June I was 200 pounds

NOW:

190 Edit: 185 Edit: 181

seriously, how long do you think you'd last by eating that few calories a day? 3-5 days more tops. You need energy and nutrition to move around.

and like I said, your body will lose weight for a few days and then it'll adapt. it'll realize you're starving it and your metabolism will go down the tubes. after that you won't lose any weight at all and find that it's even harder to lose weight cause your body is now holding onto all the fat and energy you give it cause it doesn't know when you're gonna give it a next meal so it's trying to conserve fat like rations.

I hate to say this but what you're doing is DOOMED for failure.
You might lose 10-15 pounds of mostly water weight. And once you start eating regularly again, it'll all come back and maybe with a vengence.

I understand your goals. I really know what it is like to struggle with losing weight and wanting to have the ideal image. However, you'd be better off trying to lose inches than trying to lose weight, simply because you are more concerned with the look than the health risks/benefits. A lot of weight you lose in the beginning in water weight and it does not always stay off even if you continue strict diet and exercise. Take measurements of your arms, bust, waist, hips, and thighs. Measure once a week or so. Of course, still weigh yourself but you'll know if you are really losing fat with measurements. Don't forget with both however if you are exercising you may be building up muscle that weighs more than fat and may cause an increase in some areas but a decrease in others.

Please don't get carried away with this!! If you maintain a 850 calorie diet and exercise, you should have no problem losing weight. Just don't do this for to long. It does become an addiction that you can't control. If you feel yourself falling into those paterns, please let me know. We will all help you through it!

Lecture time.

Sit down young lady...

Your body is still growing and changing, you CANNOT deprive it of the calories and nourishment that it needs while it is still growing.

NOW is the time for you to learn PROPER eating habits and what a well balanced meal is. Fad diets, crash diets, starvation diets DO NOT WORK long term...

What works is a sensible eating plan, it doesn't matter what others eat, you are doing this for yourself, and if you are not doing this for yourself you're doing it for the wrong reasons. and an exercise plan.

Exercise doesn't mean going to the gym and pumping iron, exercise means stepping away from the computer and going for a walk around the block in the neighborhood. Exercise is movement. It can also mean jumping rope (wear a sports bra, if you are the least bit busty you will hurt yourself) or dancing in your bedroom. But move.

AND EAT...

800 calories is still too low... unless you are medically supervised.

Think about your goal. You want to lose 35 pounds in 30 days. It is not possible. Of course if it were....we'd all be skinny minny's! There is no quick fix for weight loss. Take your time and enjoy your senior year. If you do this right, by time the Winter Formal rolls around you will have a fabulous body in which all the hot guys are going to want you for!!

You can do this. There is no shame in taking your time and doing it right. You want to do this once...not two or three times right? A starvation diet is going to totally backfire, and will probably make you worse off.

Please, please think about what we've said...and know that we're hear to listen and help.

*squishy hugs*

starvation diets are definatly bad news, 850 calories is even much too low. i know everybody has been saying the same thing but its definatly true.

think about it , you cant eat only 850 calories forever  ... and so when you start eating normal again your metabolism will be all messed up and youll probably gain back even more weight. try taking it slow by eating healthy about 1200 calories a day and incorporating exercise into your day..

good luck reaching your goals! :)

Thanks for all the info. I've increased my diet to 1000 calories. I don't think that rapid weight loss was brought upon by an insufficient diet becuase I've lost 5 more pounds. Perhaps I just shed easily. As of now I have lost 15 pounds since monday!

Of course you lost weight because of your diet....you were eating the equivilent to one meal (not even) a day.

I really hope that you will be able to keep the weight off, I really do. Good luck.
