OK, I know what I did...now how do I get rid of it?!

I took a walk after an arguement. 3.5 hours later I decided to stop and go home. I think I covered 20-25Km.

I was wearing the flattest most unsupportive shoes (one step up from a flipflop). It is/was about 0.5cm thick and made from a plasticy rubber material. Not made for walking in anyway. I had blisters where the strap was and I don't think the shoes are wearable anymore.

I was very tierd when I got home, had quite bad odema but I was otherwise fine.

Next morning, I woke to discover really intense muscle pain on the backs of both my legs. Makes it difficult to walk. I have since reydrated, been to the gym (which is fine as I tend to do things which have my legs bent at all times) but walking is really painful!

I know why...I didn't stretch. I didn't drink enough/any water (and had had a glass of wine) and kept walking long after I started to feel any pain and any swelling (odema).

I have tried stretching, taking ibuprofen, exercising, the power plate and using a foam roller. It still hurts!

Its been over 48 hours- how long can DOMS last? is there anything that can help relieve it faster then just waiting?

Ahh- posted this in the wrong place! -meant to be in the injury forum! Is anyone able to move this post for me as I can't seem to delete it and don't want to create a duplicate thread.

It sounds like you have an 'overuse' injury. Basically when you do something you are not accustomed to, and do it too long, you create a lot of muscle tears and/or soft tissue damage, that can take 10-14 days for your body to fully recover from. A lot of weekend athletes suffer from that, as well as homeowners who take on a physically demanding project and work until it is done. Unfortunately, the only cure is time (along with rest, good nutrition and maybe some light stretching and/or recovery exercises).

Yes, think it is an overuse thing. Irritated by myself for not taking notice and at least stretching- I was in pain when I had stopped, felt better just by sitting down. (I think I was dehydrated as I had been crying and had a drink) but this is no excuse- I should know better!

Just annoyed as I have only just gotten over a g2 sprained ankle! Grrrrr!!

Stretching I thought would help but at the gym seemed to make things feel worse! Not that I am not going to stretch but OMG was I limping afterwards! Is that normal?

Rested today and it felt better by the end of the day (today is my rest day). Hoping it doesn't return full force when I go back to the gym tomorrow.
