OH Squat! Technique and Mentality! - HOSS??

OH Squat! Technique and Mentality! - HOSS??

OK-- here is a copy and paste of me and another- LIFTER talking about this particular lift.

If you do these and have experience let's hear from you.

If this thread promted you to go do a google search on whgat the lift is, then please go on with your bad self.

Let's pick up the conversation here---

On the pressing, I don't squeeze the abs at all, it seems to mainly be lower back which just seems to happen naturally to me. Do you think I should be squeezing the abs?

lol-- i was asking you. When i get heavy on this lift, like 185 ish, it is like my belly wants go out, and my lower back is hangin on. But if I squeeze my core, then if feel a fall forward feeling.

i probably just need to more of them for awhile.

and these my friend are a core exercise, totally. It's not how much you can press, nor is it how much you can squat. IT IS HOW MUCH YOU CAN KEEP STABLE WHILE YOU SQUAT WITH A PRESS IN PLACE.

OH squat seems to be all core.
that's my .02

i'm gunna throw up a thread.

Well, I've been clean & pressing, there's no squat involved in that, maybe FF was thinking of clean & jerk

But still, if you all pretend that I was talking about an OH squat movement for the purpose of the thread :)

the discussion is about OH squat! what to do with the core as you get heavy-- read the damn thing!

hahahaha

i am testy
:jumping:FF:jumping:

It is absolutely almost all core! Your shoulder/leg strength does play a facor to an extent but once you got the squat down the true test lies within your core. Practicing OH Squats to get the form down will help immensely rather than practicing the strength aspect of it. I LOVE THIS EXERCISE!!

OH Squat

To me the OH squat is one of the best full body exercises going. Especially for old guys (40+ years). I don't try to go heavy anymore with the squats but the OH doesn't seem to put as much stress on the knees. Really have to focus when doing them for sure. If you think the OH Squat is tough try the single leg squat with no weight...I still need to get help by holding on to a cable but I love those too.:SaiyanSmilie_anim:

You need a lot of balanced core strength to OH squat. I couldn't even get half-way down before I started doing good mornings.

That, and there's also muscular balance. If your glutes/quads/hams are too off-balance in relation to each other, you won't be able to do a good OH squat.

If you have poor mobility, you won't be able to get a good OH squat.

If you have poor shoulder mobility, the bar will come forward and you will lose it.

Lotta factors on this one. Like evo said many moons ago-- the OH squat is a good way to tell if you are unbalanced/weak in some areas.

This thread has actually made me think about incorporating OH Squats into my workout. I want to find out my imbalances/weaknesses..

It's a good idea to incorporate OH stretches in your warm up. And shoulder traction exercises. You can even do it right now-- get a towel, get a wider-than shoulder width grip, keep it taught, put it behind your head, and try to get the towel to wipe your upper back by just moving your arms up and down. Like a BTN press except you're trying to get as low as possible.

Then there's the snatch grip-- just stretching overhead...basically download Wendler's 5/3/1 and look at his warm up/stretching stuff. (everything else is good too)

i will do soe tonight.

This has me thinking I am going to heavy too fast. one thing for sure is that I can press a heck of alot more than I can snatch-

I have been putting on the weight in the rack, high, picking up at chest, pressing, then doing the OH. My arms and shoulders are strong, so this gives me the ability to get alot up there. I'm guessing more than I should be trying to OQ squat.

SO- tonight I will try
Snatch to position, then OH squat. I will start at 95 and see how that goes.

haha- why would OH squat be better for a 40+ than for a younger person? LOL!
