I don't like to promote my own site, and I hope this doesn't change anyone's impressions of me for doing so (I hate spam and people promoting on the forums, myself) but I recently wrote an article that answers a ton of newbie questions and that I've been quoting for a while now.
(I'm not going to be reproducing the entire article here for search engine reasons).
If you find any factual errors, grammatical errors, or you hate me and want me to take down this post forever
D) tell me and I'll take care of it.

Nutrition Basics vol. 1: The Basic Nutrients
Good nutrition is 80% of good health.
Chances are at one point in your life you've heard someone say "You are what you eat". Chances also are you didn't really bother to think about what that means, either. The truth is you are very literally what you eat.
Your body is made up of building blocks that you get mostly from two sources: what you eat, and what you breathe. Your physical body is nothing other than food particles rearranged to create this person you call "myself". The particles in your body are constant in size, so when you grow, it's not because your building blocks are getting bigger, it's because you're putting more of them (in the form of food) in your system.
So you can see how important it is that you eat well and get plenty of good nutrients in your body. If you put junk in, you're made of junk!
knowing is half the battle
If you're like the average person today, you're having a hard time knowing what's good for you and what's bad. With the wave of diet crazes around today, it seems like there's someone bad-mouthing every nutrient around. They're saying carbs are bad, fats are bad, sugars are bad - but what is it these nutrients really do? Why are they in your food? Who has the right answers?
You'll be relieved to know that it's very simple, and people have known the answers to these questions for ages. In this article, I'll go over the four fundamental nutrients - carbohydrates, protein, fats, and water - and get you started on the road to being informed and healthy.
