Now officially obese

Hello,

I just found out that I am now considered to be obese. Which is surprising to me because I don't think I am that big. I wouldn't even consider myself to be fat. But I now have to consider the fact that I have lost perspective on my own body image. And so I need to change my lifestyle.

So I could use any advice that others can give me. I want to lose about 40 lbs. I have no specific time frame, but six months would be ideal.

As for diet, I only have to be concerned about 1 meal a day. My breakfast is healthy. I eat bran cereal with fresh fruit and skim milk each day. And my lunch is provided at the school that I teach at, which is generally quite healthy. It generally consists of rice, a vegetable dish and soup. I will eat anything for dinner but it needs to be simple since I am living in an Asian country and many foods, spices, etc. are not readily available. I drink an excessive amount of Coke light, but it has no calories so that should not be a concern. And I do not drink caffeine after 8pm.

As for exercise. I am willing to exercise everday, but I am very out of shape. It is difficult for me to breathe, in part because I am a smoker. I do not intend to quit. My exercise has previously consisted of some stretching exercises, some time on the stationary bike and some time on the treadmill, with occasional moderate weight lifting.

So any advice would be welcome.

Welcome Ataloss!
I think the reason you could be running out of breath is because of your smoking ..stuff ends up in your lungs and you end up not having enough room for the air to go into your lungs ..
but if you dont want to quit thats fine ...

but If you want to lose weight .. you just need to exercise and eat well ... read the sticky threads on the site and you will get an idea ...

best wishes

its going to be extrememly difficult to get in exercise if you are obese and smoking. i'm not trying to be rude, just realistic. if you are serious about changing your body then you need to think more about how much you are willing to commit.

Hi and welcome. I'm considered obese as well, but I quite a bit more weight to lose than you. It seems that you are eating pretty well for breakfast and lunch. As for dinner I suggest looking up low fat recipes. Foodfit.com worked for me before I did Jenny Craig. Are you drinking at least 64 ounces of water everyday you won't retain as much sodium which can keep on the pounds. Try it! As far as the smoking goes, i know that it will be hard to quit. I'm a smoker myself. But since I've been working out for the last month I don't want to smoke as much anymore. I do plan stop eventually, but if you don't plan to stop try to cut back so that you can work out more. I hope that helps.

I like smoking so that is just out of the question. But I have a friend who is a military man and he smokes but is quite healthy and not out of breath, so I think it is possible.

Well, today is Day 1.
