Not too great of an idea

Blacked out today

Heh, as most of you should know, the 30 Hour Famine took place yesterday and today. I did not eat since 6 am in the morning yesterday till noon today. Everything was going fine for me, untlil around 10:30 am today. I was sitting down for at least half an hour and i stood up to go to the school gym (where we slept) and i guess i blacked out. I distinctly remember being very light headed before i came too. I'm fine now, but it was scary! I probably didn't drink enough water. I brought a 2 litre jug with me but i didn't drink all of it. Anyways, any suggestions to help prevent it from happening again.

But I can't eat. The 30 hour famine is a fast for 30 hours to help benefit the children that live in poverty. I'm fine now though :D

I just gotta say - I don't get it. I can think of some more productive things to do to help the poverty sticken children that don't risk your own health.

Anyway, theres probobly a formula somewhere to figure out how much water you need to consume to be successful with the fasting.

i agree with mccarley, instead of starving your body (which to me is not worth it) you can send $10 to an aid fund to third world countries to unfortunate people. As $10 can do wonders to a poverty struck family ... that in my opinion is well worth it. But i guess im sort of off topic here  sorry

Lol well i did send money! The 30 hour famine is a fund raiser and also a fast. I raised 25 bucks XD Not too great, but at least it's something

I do alot of volunteer work to help others - and one of the cornerstones of doing this kind of work, is to take care of yourself. If you get sick or unhealthy or whatever - that's one less person able to give their best to helping others (in your case, poverty sticken children). Take care of yourself first!

For the record... fasting is a great way to cleanse the body and in many cultures, it is a proven way to promote good health. It will stunt the metabolism, but not for that long if only done for a day or two, and the other benefits associated with it are manifold.

Some quick ones:
1. Detoxification
2. Gives the digestive system a rest (why do you think every system but this one deserves a break?)
3. Rapid treatment for addiction
4. Quiets allergies
5. Whitens eyes and clears skin
6. Shrinks the stomach back to its normal size

A fast of course is something you don't want to engage in regularly. Once a month can be healthy, but that's the most frequently I'd ever suggest was healthy. I wouldn't recommend it as a pathway to weight-loss, because even though ketosis leaves you running on your body's fats, the accumulation of ketone bodies has been shown to be extremely dangerous and can lead to liver failure.

FIL,

I would think that you could get ALL these benefits by simply eating a reasonable clean healthy diet.

As far as giving the digestive system a rest, somehow I feel like my digestive system gets more of a rest between meals then my heart will ever have (hopefully).

If you are blacking out, then something is wrong.

I have to agree with Fil, Fasting is one of the greatest ways for the body to rid itself of toxic substances and too quote an article by Dr. Furhman "The fast does not merely detoxify; it also breaks down superfluous tissue - fat, abnormal cells, atheromatous plaque, and tumors--and releases diseased tissues and their cellular products into the circulation for elimination. Toxic or unwanted materials circulate in our bloodstream and lymphatic tissues, and are deposited in and released from our fat stores and other tissues. An important element of fasting detoxification is mobilizing the toxins from their storage areas." New cell growth is also stimulated and accelerated during a fast.

If you plan on doing this fast again Sebani, I would recommend a juice fast instead of a water fast. Fresh fruit and vegetable juices have a cleansing effect of their own. I do a juice fast once every couple of months and find it a little less discomforting than a water fast. It is also not encouraged to be very physically active during your fast, this is a time of rest for your body to shed unnecessary built up toxins and regenerate. However since you are doing this for a cause and not for health reasons perhaps none of this is relevant to you. Feelings of dizziness are actually quite natural, The larger the amount of built up toxins in the body the worse the discomfort may be during this time of detox.

my main argument here is that fasting does nothing for the people the fast was done for in the first place.

but i disagree about fasting removing "toxins". man that word is thrown around a lot in marketing these days. what toxins are those exactly?

i agree with redt, if you're blacking out something is very wrong. my advice, skip the fast, send the 25 bucks in yourself and stick to a healthy diet.

on one hand, fasting once a month seems reasonable from what fil and red said. but then on the other hand, it just doesnt seem like a good idea at all. i think drinking a gallon, gallon 1/2 of water a day will do me good. i dont think i could fast anyway, i love meh food too much :p

You take toxins into your body every day, whether it's from breathing polluted air (indoors and outdoors), eating poorly, eating well (grilled chicken, for example, is carcinogenic), from impurities in water (filtered AND tap). A lot of this is stored in your fat cells and can accumulate over a lifetime, water consumption or not.

Do these have a profound affect on your health? Maybe, maybe not. Arthritis can be caused by mercury poisoning, which only affects you as it accumulates in your body over decades. Eat tuna sandwiches? You probably have mercury stored in your body.

I'm not saying fasting is for everyone. I don't do it myself. I do know it to have a positive effect on peoples' health, and it's been a part of healing practice for centuries (like the hot bath to simulate a fever in ancient Greece). When you start to black out, you've probably gone too far - but that's no reason to dismiss the entire practice.

A couple other notes:

1. With enough water, a person can survive for weeks without food.

2. As far as what it does for the people suffering, it shows a real active dedication to a cause. If you think Ghandi believed in "passive resistance" you're wrong. He believed in "non-violent resistance" -- fasting, boycotting, walkouts, etc. are all very active methods of resistance that attempt to convince someone or elicit change.

It''s the rule of 3's (if I can remember from CSI) - 3 minutes no air, 3 days no water, 3 weeks no food, i think.

My question is, what other methods can be used to "detoxify" your body? I'm sure there's something that can be done that isn't so rough on the ol bod.

Here are a few other ways:
1. Antibiotics (certain herbs)
2. Blood cleansing agents (certain herbs)
3. Diaphoretics / Sweating (steam rooms)
4. Diuretics (makes you pee more)
5. Laxatives (makes you poo more)

I used to participate in a sweat lodge once in a while. I a friend of mine is an Indian (oops, native american). I love it, it's very refreshing, when your done.
