No weight loss and a Diabetes Scare

Well..
Last week I had to scramble. I got home from a cruz with my family (which in my opinion Cruz's are very overated) and had only 2 days to move everything out of my old apartment. I am unsure if it is from the stress or moving, or a mix of both, but something strange happened. When it was all over, I got really really thirsty. Normal right? But it didn't stop. The next day I was still thirsty. I kept drinking water for 3 days straight. I drank between 3 liters to 7 liters a day, and I was still thirsty... What is worse is that I had to urinate almost every 2 hours and it was coming out like Pepsi clear!

I mentioned this to My coworker and she said it is a possible early sign of Diabetes. I've never been more freaked out in my life. To me, having the possiblity of Diabetes is like total failure. It means that I suck so bad at nutrition, that my body gave up and said "alright, Give us the pills..."

The last 2 days It had still been going on. but slowing down. After a while I began beleiving that I don't have Diabetes. My family doesn't and I'm not pouring sugar in my mouth every day. But perhaps a "Life Change" needs to happen.

Maybe I really do need to give up soda, and all junk food. Maybe I do need to force a daily intake of Fruits and vegitables.

I know there are many factors to diabetes, and many early signs too. But I am more concerned with the fact that I cannot seem to keep myself into a healthy routine. The last 3 months I've tried to significantly change the way I eat and I feel like nothings changed. I'm still at 250 lbs. and fear my trip to Japan this summer because of my weight.

It also boggles my mind that 250 is the border line for obese Americans, yet i'm able to run 3-5 miles, rock climb and Hike up Yosemite with some rests. I feel fine, but I have so much extra weight carrying around.

Comments desired!

Thx,
-Jeb

Could be something else - like a kidney issue. This is not something you can regulate with diet and nutrition! I mean, you can keep your body healthy by eating right but sometimes, genes are genes and the environment is what it is and there are some things you can't control.

Please go and see your doctor. Peeing dark is not a good thing.

going on the cruise probably meant a whole lot of sodium in your food, which could account for the thirst... drinking a ton of water is going to lead to peeing a lot... and when you pee a lot, because you're drinking a lot of water the color of it will change. (if you're properly hydrated, urine should be light yellow, dark yellow means you're dehydrated (least according to sourced I've read)

Instead of asking co-workers for medical advice or from random but well meaning strangers for medical advice, if yu think somehting might be amiss, get your behind to a doctor. Diabetes is nothing to play around with and if it's prediabetes it can be corrected with a little effort.

You should probably go to the doctor. It wouldn't hurt. I went to the doctor because I was urinating a lot, was really tired, etc and I found out I have prediabetes. It is better to know ahead of time when there is still time to correct it. If you wait too long it may be too late. If you have prediabetes, you can change your lifestyle (lose weight and eat right) and can prevent diabetes from occuring (or at least in my case prolong it since I have many risk factors)

You just need to do a diabetes test and it will be alright. My friend got cholesterol and now she has to buy lipitor from a so that she can save some money.. She's overweight [i am too]... I'm also planning on taking a diabetes test. It's just a blood test, no need to worry too much... I hate the complications weight surplus brings..

Not necessarily the worst case scenario....

Your peeing and thirst problems could be as simple as a minor kidney or bladder infrection you picked up on the cruise. One thing about those cruise ships, heaps of people crammed into a limited amount of space all sharing buffet meals.... In my eyes not getting sick in some fashion or other is a miracle in itself. I went through the same diabetes fear many years ago where I seemed to be peeing out way more than I was putting in and was constantly thirsty. Nothing more than a minor bladder infection. Go get checked and you will feel better.

As for the not losing weight like you want to, I think you summed it up best yourself:

"Maybe I really do need to give up soda, and all junk food. Maybe I do need to force a daily intake of Fruits and vegitables."

If you aren't eating a healthy and balanced diet (including veggies and fruit and less junk food) all the running and rock climbing in the world wont get you to your goals.

The fact you can rock climb, run and do other things simply means you are strong and relatively fit. But if you don't have control over the amount and quality of food going in that really isnt a good indication. Even at 300 pounds I was often more "fit" and could exercise harder and longer than my skinny friends. If your goal is to lose weight and lose fat, the food is the biggest part of the battle. Then you will find those 3-5 miles and rock climbing just so much easier.

Being 250 pounds is not a clear indication of your overall health either. Just because 250 is obese on one person it could be quite good on another. A lot depends on your frame size and how you carry your weight. I know 250 pound guys without a spec of fat on em, and most people who know me would never guess how much I really weigh because I "wear it" well. They all guestimate at 40-50 pounds below where I actually am. Everyone and every body is different, a number on a scale is no clear indication of a persons fitness or health, just a rough guideline.

Do some reading here and you will find you are not alone in this challenge and you will find heaps of great ways to get a grip on your eating and get yourself feeling better for Japan. Its a long damn flight, so the smaller you are in the seat the happier the flight will be.
