I started my own diet "No Meals after 6pm" on Nov. 1, 2004. Yeah, I lost 4.5 kilos at this short time. Is it healthy? Ridiculous question!! But I feel better than before. What I am wonderring now is that when I eat my normal meal the day over, it won't take five minutes after eating that I have to vomit everything. Am I sick? Pls. help me...... :(

i don't think not eating after 6 is bad ... especially if you are going to bed fairly early. If you've eatin enough during the day to get your "recommended daily intake", then you have all the energy you need to carry you through to the morning. In fact, the worst thing you can do is have a meal late at night before going to bed (unless you're running a marathon or something the next day).

Not sure about the whole vommitting thing, tho ?

I also don't think the vomiting has anything to do with not eating after dinner (but check with your doctor, of course). Not eating after dinner is a very common and well-regarded practice for weight-loss and weight-management. The only concern I would have is if you're doing any very significantly vigorous exercise after dinner.

I've read an article by bob green, Oprah's weight loss coach, that you should stop eating 3 hrs before bedtime, whenever your bedtime it. If its at 2am, then stop eating at 11pm, if its at 8pm, then stop eating at 5pm, ect.

I dont know about this factoid.. I have read many things about it and other aspects of weight loss..and basically what my doc says (who is also a nutritionist) its not when you eat its what you eat. You should only eat when your hungry and never skip meals... eat several small ones or 3 normal ones..but eat..and dont vomit.. you need to go see your doc if that keeps up..not normal

Well if you do eat later at night then eat some slow digesting foods like cottage cheese or brown rice, theyre good for you and with them taking so long to be used in the body there will be minimal fat gain, while eating sugary stuff will go "straight to the hips" lol.

hey i ALWAYS eat after 6pm. im just a night person and always get hungry then. but i just work it out so i have a couple hundred calories left to "spend" so to speak. i think as long as you dont go over your caloric intake for the day (lets say its 1500 a day) and stay away from sugary stuff like errtu said, you'll be ok!

 You didn't say weather you are vomiting because you are unable to keep the food down at that time or if you are making yourself vomit. Two completly different causes but both can cause tooth decay and other medical problems. A doctor is in definate order ASAP.

I agree!

I could not do it myself. I too am a night person and I have to eat late. But I eat low carb low calorie foods. But if you can do it, I'm sure its great thing. Then carbs for breakfast, and none after lunch :)

There's nothing wrong with eating late at night so long as you don't overdo it and go over (at least too much) of your calorie intake.

As for the vomiting... I have no idea what to suggest.... uhm... hmm.. maybe go see a doctor?

I agree with wonderwoman the bottomline is caloric intake, to stay on a "program" and to make as little changes, other then smaller portions, more exercise and cutting out sugars, rice, pastas, and ALL FLOUR and fried foods,AND BEING CONCIOUS OF ALL THE OTHER TIPS THAT CAN HELP US REACH OUR GOALS.

But I think the real answer is to have a heart to heart with yourself and decide to put yourself first on the things that need to be done in your day. Ask and explain to your husband and kids you'll need an hour alone to exercise etc... I've decided to step up to the plate and try to love myself and take care of myself the way I want to and like to take care of my husband , kids and others; I'm sick of being crabby because I feel FAT!! It sounds horrible but I feel SOOOO good when I'm eating right, exercising and slender!!

That's great info, NB :) Now I won't feel so guilty when I have dinner around 7. Thanks for this. Also, I usually have desert anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour after I eat dinner (if I have desert, which usually turns out to be an apple or something). Is this better? Or should I be waiting a few hours before eating again?

I think it's really cool that you give yourself that time in between... expecially if it's your "last supper" haha.. if you do it that way your body is constantly metabolising food and I think another reason why apples work so well for you is that the fiber settles your stomach. anyways.. I don't eat after 8pm.. unless I'm running late on dinner. I find that I sleep much better if I'm not trying to digest food - I relax more and plus once you're not movin around and that you're not burning off those calories... so frankly for your "last supper" (hee hee) fruit is best... something with least carbs. But no need to stress over it too much! As long as you're staying within a good range of cals, you should be doing great. And Eric if you're not hungry 20mins - 1 hr after supper you could hold off a little while to eat that apple later.. timing does play quite the role! Keeping your body happy and not hungry is key.

Hi Coire:)
My day is more active from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. so I take my apple or pear from breakfast or lunch, depending how hungry I am at what part of my day and I cut it up and put it in a tupperware dish and take it to work and eat it at 7 p.m.ish. Then when I get home from work at 9:30 I eat my larger snack. I can't give you advice, you should be giving me advice- congratulations on your weightloss!!:)
I just wanted to thank this website and all of you because we have a gym and Monday was the 1st day of a 2 week weight loss competition. It was such a success I got 30 people from my 3 spinning classes who were interested- THANKS GUYS!!;)

In the Aruvedyic system it is adknowledged that your stomach starts shutting down between 5-6 pm so that it can succesfully detox at around midnight (varying slightly depending on your body type). Personally I eat a light/very light dinner of some yoghurt or freshly juiced fruit at around 5:30 and I feel so, so, so, so much better for it. Its all about getting in tune with the natural system, eating your last meal before or while the sun goes down. I'm pretty sure also here in the west they know that eating late is directly related to weight gain.
