Newbie

Hi all,
I am a perfect newbie to fitness, however I do have one goal, that is to do more chin ups. I have a portable bar at home and able to do 12 chin ups with palm facing me. What I need is someone who care enough to explain to me the meaning of sets, and reps?? My target is 20 for now...please help!

Thanks in advance.

rep stands for 'repetition', that is, the number of times you do an exercise.

a set is a group of reps performed togther in one go.

For example, if you did 12 chinups, then had a rest, then came back and did another 12, that would be 2 sets of 12 reps.

12 chins is a good start, just keep practicing til you can do 20!

If you can do 12, I'd try adding some weight. Wear a weight vest with 20-30 pounds (or hang 20-30 pounds from a chin/dip belt with a chain) and see if you can get 8-9 reps. That's the fastest way I've been able to get my unweighted chin numbers up.

Twelve is already more than most people can do. Keep it up!

thanks all! you guys are too helpful...some query though...what is the proper interval between sets? I have a pair of ankle weight straps with me, does it help by wearing them during chin ups? Cos read somewhere that a waist weight works better.Work life sucks over here...best way to destress is to work out...my best motivation would be the scene where Stallone pumping chin ups in Rocky 4...:D
