Newbie with lovehandles

Hello all,
I am 24 and haven't exercised regulary for at least 8 years (and then was only doing what was required for school). Thankfully I have always been skinny (thin as I prefer to call it). I am 5'8" 130 lbs, which I think is within the good range for my height, but I have no idea about BMI and all those other measurements. I've noticed some growth in the love handle area, but have not really gained weight or change dress/pants size. I figure once I turn 30 or have a kid, I'm doomed unless I get into the habit of exercising now. My husband has also been wanting us both to get in better shape...I can't even walk around my block without huffing and puffing. I'm hoping I can get some advice from the experts (at least alot more expert than me). I would like to exercise in my home or in my neighborhood. We have a nordic track (which I hate) and I was considering getting an exercise bike (used), though not sure how much that would actually do for me. I would like some kind of routine that is 3x per week for 30 mins or so, that will get me more fit and maybe even reduce the love handle area. I'm kinda afraid of videos, I think I would feel like a fool...I guess its a long shot but maybe you miracle workers out there can help me. Thanks!

I found low impact cardio/ab tape on Google called Latin Power Abs. The tape itself is about 60 minutes long, but is segmented by different dance routines which put alot of emphasis on stretching the waist and abs. I've already lost 2 1/2 inches in the first month and I'm thrilled with the results.

ok I wont be a spoiled brat

Did a little reading on the site and realized nothing will magically remove the love handles without getting rid of all my other fat first. Its frustrating becuase I dont feel fat...so I think I dont need to work hard. But I dont feel good either, so that is a sign that I'm not too healthy/fit. I am planning on changing my diet and have come to grips with the fact that I may need to take a class and do some videos. I'm thinking if I start walking around my neighborhood and build up to a run for about 30 mins every three days, and then do pilates 20 or 30 mins, that will give me cardio and some flexibility training, etc. (I cant touch my toes - dont even think I can reach my ankles). Read alot about pilates on here and seems like they will be good for me, but am concerned about not doing them right. Is it really necessary to take a class first...I mean I am totally new to exercising in any capacity. I'm not fully against a class, just afraid I will feel dumb. Trying to find a friend to do it with me. So we will see. Also I am thinking of eating salads - veggie and fruit, everyday for lunch and then having a meat and potatoes with veggie dinner. If I eat breakfast its usually a bagel or english muffin. I also have been drinking ensures, since I dont get enough of the vitamins/minerals etc. in my normal fast food for lunch, meals in a box dinners. Should I keep doing ensures or switch to a slim fast or a breakfast bar or for breakfast? Does the salad, real dinner plan sound ok? Does it go with the exercise plan? Thanks to anyone who is willing to help me...I know I sounded like a brat before...Sorry...
Thanks!
Liz

The increase in fruits and veggies mean a lot. Even just that plus exercise cutting out soda and stuff, drinking more water is a big step. Just take things in moderation, remember its a lifestyle change you want not just some fad. Instead of ensures, why not a multivitamin for women, need that folic acid etc.. Try to eliminate those box dinner things, real food tastes better even though it may take a little longer. I'm a box dinner victim myself especially since the hubby ain't home.
Sounds like you got yourself a plan......good luck!

Thanks, I'm doing good

Thanks for your reply. I am doing really great. I've lost about 5 lbs and can see a different in my tummy. From everything I read its those tough spots that gain weight first and lose it last so I am trying to stop it before it spreads to anywhere else! I've stuck with the meal plan for the most part...I had two sweets this week...but that is nothing compared to my usual ice cream every day deal. Everything is tasting great too. My biggest problem area related to food has been Coca-cola. I am an addict! I started out trying to limit myself to one a day, but it is just not working! I think though, once I dont have any left at work, I wont buy them any more and I will force myself to drink water. Thanks for the suggestion about a multi-vitamin. That is a great idea. Can you suggest any particular one? Also I'm failing on the exercise...well by failing I mean I havent even tried. How do you get motivated to move when you havent for so long??? I think my main issue is just plain ignorance. I dont know how to exercise. Maybe a video on the basics would be good, like how to do a correct crunch, squat, lunge, etc. Any ideas? Well again thanks for all your help and encouragement.

Motivation

Have you tried getting your wife involved? It's a lot easier with two people. I had luck with the fitness challenge board game.
