Hi everyone. I just found your forum today. Already I see great information on here.

I'm 37 and currently 70 lbs overweight. My weight problems started 10 years ago- my metabolism seemed to come to a screeching halt. I tried to workout and only gained weight- 10 lbs a year! I changed jobs and became a contract employee two years ago and my wake up call on my weight came when I started shopping for private health insurance since I would no longer be covered on a group plan. I got rejected by Blue Cross because I exceeded their maximum weight limit. The carrier who did accept me charges me extra for my weight, and made my acid reflux a pre-existing condition which made my prescriptions quite expensive. All of a sudden, I started to see the monthly costs associated with being so overweight. Late last year I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and since I started treatment in April and made dietary/lifestyle changes I have lost 20 lbs. I go to the gym 3 or 4 days a week, mostly doing resistance training but also some cardio. I go for one or two walks a week in my neighborhood, which is quite hilly. I've completely revamped my diet and am now on an anti-inflammatory diet which is similar to a Mediterranean diet. I always thought I ate healthfully before but I had some changes I needed to make- probably the biggest change for me was that I cut all processed foods. I make my meals from scratch now, which has cut out a lot of sugars and preservatives and who knows what else from my diet.

My goal is to try and return to the weight I was at before I started gaining, which means I need to lose 70 more lbs. I am willing to accept a bit higher number- mostly I just want my health and energy back. I want to stop having lower back problems and acid reflux. I want people in public to stop looking "through" me like I'm not there. I want people I haven't seen in years to stop doing double takes and asking me "What happened?" as though I've been in a train wreck. I'm definitely doing this for me. My fiancé is very supportive and loved me thin and loved me not-so-thin and he is going to marry me regardless. It's for me that I want to do this, because I'm not happy with my current self.

What I am looking for in a forum is some social support and some great ideas. I enjoy conversing on forums and find that online communities are a good tool for me.

Anyway, thanks and I'm really looking forward to participating.

Dee,

Nice to have you here. Sounds like the treatment for the Hashimoto's Thyroiditis has kind of jump started your weight loss. Thats great - congrats on the 20lbs lost so far. Before you know it the 70 will be off too just stick to it and don't lose that burning flame of motivation. If you have any questions or need any advice I would be happy to share what has worked for me the past year. Welcome again and good luck on the rest of your journey.

Thanks to you both for the welcome. I'm enjoying reading the posts and hearing the wisdom of people who have done this or are doing this, it's encouraging to see all the progress everyone is making. It makes me feel like I can do this, too.

Hey EagleRiverDee!

Welcome. You can lose the 70 lbs for sure (that's exactly how much weight I lost.) Dial in the diet and start some sort of consistent exercise... it works. Don't hesitate to ask anyone anything. Even finding your way around the forum is tricky at first (it was for me). There's plenty of good stickies too. If you need help getting started, give me a holler.
