New to weight loss

Hi, I'm Naomi. I'm 20 years old and thought I could use some support in losing weight, so I joined. I used to be able to eat anything I wanted and not gain weight...but all of a sudden, that stopped being the case. I gained 20 pounds in 2 months (they were VERY stressful months)! I'm not really overweight, but I miss my old shape.

So here I am. I just joined a gym and have been going every day, doing an hour of cardio on the treadmill.

I've been "dieting" for the past month and a half, but haven't lost much weight. Mostly because I find myself sneaking out of the house to get McFlurry's and cookies at 7 in the morning before my partner wakes up! =X I'm not used to watching what I eat and it feels really claustrophobic so far and it terrifes me that I may have to make this a way of life. Any advice for getting over it?

Hi Naomi, I think the most successful diets are the ones that make it the way for life. I am a junk-food lover but luckily also like healthy foods. I am slowly learning to use the junk-food as a reward so I don't limit what I eat. I understand that it's hard to accept weight gain irrelevant of your size and we all have different frame sizes etc. It sounds like you are doing the right thing by going to the gym and working hard on the cardio stuff :) I have a tendency to secretly eat really bad stuff too. I think that'll be the key to controlling your weight and more than likely your happiness. I don't know about you but I get immediate fulfillment when I sneak food and then feel gross afterwards. I hope you don't always feel claustrophobic when you think about changing your eating habits. Just remember small steps are good to reinforce patterns in your eating and health. Try being honest with your partner about your eating and ask them to help recognize signs and just help you through those times without judging. You should try starting a diary and you can post as well as other people. This will help you identify some of those patterns and allow other people to get to know you and perhaps give you suggestions. Good luck in your endeavors! Rachie

I was the same as you, never gained and ate like a horse. It all catches up with you eventually - usually early to mid twenties :/

Those McFlurries are super calorie laden, do you guys get the yogurt berry crunch? its a low fat yogurt thing with fruit in the bottom and musili on top. It tastes pretty good and only has 160 calories rather than the 300ish the flurry has :)
