eek2::flame:: Hey everybody,I am really new to all of this here.I have always tried to do this on my own,and until recently have never had problems doing it!About a year ago I started having mysterious swelling in my whole body, but my legs and feet were the worst. It would get so bad at times, that my legs would tear open!I've seen so many doctors, and Specialists, and after a year of being shuffled back and forth to different doctors, none of which knew any more than the first!Because of the severe swelling,I was not able to do alot of moving, much less get any kind of exercise,so between the water weight, and the fat weight,I had put on 100 pds.of extra weight! Now I am literally DOUBLE the woman that I was before all of this started! But finally, after going to so many different Doctors, and going thru so many tests,I FINALLY went to a clinic a few hours away from where I live, and got a diagnosis. The Doctor walked in the room, and after ten minutes of looking at me,and my records, was able to tell me what was wrong with me.Lipodermaschlerosis,is what it is called.I NEVER HEARD OF IT!!But I guess that it is chronic(Goody!)and that it could take years to get somewhat better. But I will never get totally better, which is lovely!Years ago I suffered from anorexia, and I cant figure out how somebody goes from being anorexic,to being obese now!My Doctor, put me on Orlistat,Xenical.I havent noticed anything yet,but I have tried the whole healthy eating, and bull. But when you are unable to exercise you need an extra boost.

Welcome to the forum.

When you say that you are unable to exercise - how do you go with walking.

When I started out I could not do much in the way of exercise. Many of the bigger people have their limitations at first.

I started off by walking round the block - and it was pretty slow when I first started. I didnt worry about how long it took - but increased the distance as soon as I felt that I could manage it. I made sure that I went out walking every day. Consistency is very important in my experience.

I started wearing a pedometer for every step of the day. Each day I would see if I could walk more steps than I had walked on the previous day. That helped.

People will tell you that walking has to be done briskly to be of any benefit to weight loss. That is a load of rubbish and I can tell you that any walking is very beneficial to anyone who is carrying a lot of weight.

Swimming can be good for big people too since your weight is supported.

Maybe a local gym can suggest some weight exercises that you could do. Most gyms will be happy to give you a free session and discuss your goals with you if they think that you are toying with taking out a membership.

One thing is certain - weight loss will be easier if you can find a form of exercise that you are able to do. Being a large person is in itself no reason to not do any exercise - although I understand that you have other medical issues coming into the picture.

You say that you have tried eating healthily to no avail. Did you log your food and track your nutrition? - ensuring that you were getting the right quantities of such things as protein, fibre, calcium, healthy fats etc. Many of us believe that we are eating healthily if we know that we are having some protein and veg without being sure that we are having the correct quantities. Some foods are marketed as healthy when in fact they are high in calories and not beneficial for weight loss. Have you counted your sodium? - having no more than 2400mg per day since this can cause water retention which would exacerbate the problem that you already have there.
