Hello all, my name is Josh and I am 28 years old. I have currently decided that enough is enough and to get back into shape and start working out again. I am 5"7' 200 lbs or 170 cm and 91 Kg or there about. I have decided to eventually get P90X or Insanity or maybe both, but before I go all hardcore I am reducing my caloric intake (slightly) and eating 5 small meals per day rather than 3 regular meals and NO snacks in between (sample meal would be a 1/4 cup grilled chicken with 1 cup romaine lettuce and oil and vinegar for dressing lightly salted and with black pepper or 1/2 cup cottage cheese and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter). I have completely cut out soda and sweet tea and stick mainly to water, milk, and gatorade (mostly water). As far as my workouts I am jogging aprox 1 mile per day along with 50 crunches (2 sets), and burnout on overhead butterfly presses with 5 lb dumbbells (2 sets). I am currently taking soy protein powder with 8 oz of regular milk 1x per day as one meal, one a day energy multivitamins, and glucosamine/chondroitin supplements as well. I also am taking Hydroxycut (only for 1 month) I have never really been big on the fad diets and I am using it to help me boost my energy levels for temporary after that I am stopping. I was in the military and I do know how to exercise properly and I stretch before and after each workout that I do to make sure that I don't mess up any of my muscles or sprain anything. At work I usually walk about 4-5 miles per day 5 days a week as I have a supervisory job and have little time to stay seated. Is there anything else I should be doing?
btw my goal is to get to 150-160 lbs and only to tone up so I know that using P90X or Insanity will get me there but I think that it would just be too hard to just go for it to begin with and start with a moderate exercise program and I do this 3 days skip a day the repeat as far as how often I exercise but my meals stay the same I allow myself 1 bad for you food per month so that way I don't just go binge on bad foods as well.

Hey Josh, welcome to the forum!

That's great that you've decided to take care of yourself and get back into shape! I think you're off to a good start so far, but there are a few suggestions that I'd make, which mostly involve saving you money :). First, ditch the gatorade. It's not necessary and you're consuming extra calories that will slow your weight loss. It's really not any better than drinking soda, unless you require it for training purposes, which most people do not. I would also recommend ditching the hydroxycut. You are getting the 'energy' from the caffeine, so if you need caffeine, drink something less expensive and healthier for you, like tea (with little or no added sugar and only low fat milk). As for the antioxidants that may or may not be in the hydroxycut, you're much better off to get these from fruits and vegetables, or things like tea. Also, the more fit you become, the more energy you'll have, so it may just take time before you notice your energy increasing. I would recommend that you stick with just the multivitamin. What is your reason for taking the glucosamine/chondroitin? Was this recommended for a particular reason?

As far as the workouts go, I think it's a good idea to start slow, then work up to doing something like p90x to avoid feeling overwhelmed or unable to keep up with the workouts when you're first starting. The main suggestion that I'd make is to add more strengthening exercises... it looks like you're doing 2 exercises - one for the abs and one for the shoulders. It would be a good idea to start strengthening more muscle groups to avoid muscle imbalances later... it will also help you out more once you transition to p90x or insanity as you'll have a base of strength to help get you started!

I think it's a good idea to allow yourself to 'cheat' once in a while, provided that 1 cheat meal doesn't turn into a cheat week :)

Good luck and keep us posted!
