First I'll start off by saying that I'm 24, female, 5 foot 9 inches and weigh around 260. I wasn't always this big, but because of 6 months of bed rest, I sorta blew up. I'm ready to try and loose the extra weight I have put on from that serious accident. It's been about a year and a half since the accident and my doctors have given me go ahead for physical activity. But because I have physical limitations, I can't do exercise like "normal" people. I can't run, jump, do most floor activities, or change elevation quickly (like bending over). I'm highly considering joining a gym in our community that offers free personal training with a year membership that includes nutritional information. I feel that I can loose the weight if I have someone counting on me to do it. My whole family has basically given up hope on my exercise goals and say that you talk a lot but don't do anything about it. And I have no friends because they deserted me after my accident. I want to change the way I feel about myself, and help in my recovery. But I fear that my excuse is going to be "because of my limitations I can't do that". And that will set me back. I mean I know to keep telling myself that I'll look good, feel better about myself, and help recovering what still needs help. But that only goes so far in motivating myself. When I become bogged down in school work or other obligations, exercise/dieting seems like the first thing to go. What keeps you guys motivated even when facing no support?

Welcome Sapphire. Sorry to hear about your accident and long recovery, but glad to hear you are doing better! I'm 24 also and started out at 363, dieted for a while, stopped, got back up to 339, and now trying to lose down again. Good luck with everything and I hope you can find the right kind of support and motivation. In my opinion, that's always the hardest. Good luck!

By the way, there is a 20 somethings club under The Club section. Looks like there haven't been many people using it lately, but I'm trying to get it going. Maybe you could join? =)

Welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident and lack of support. If you hang around - I suspect that you will find some new friends here. I still chat all the time on FB with people that I met here six years ago...

Joining the gym sounds like a good idea. The personal trainer will help.

I found walking was the most wonderful exercise for me... I brought my weight down from 294 pounds and my main exercise on that project was walking... I hadnt had an accident like you - but you will understand that my exercise ability was limited as I was pretty fat as I am only 5ft3... LOL I didnt have youth on my side either as I didnt get my act together to lose weight until I was 47 years old...

Try walking... You can start it today and do not need any special equipment. Go at whatever speed feels right - it doesnt matter how slow - the main thing is that you get out and do something... People that say "slow walking is no benefit" do not know what they are talking about... I started really slowly - with lots of breaks... I just determined to do it every day and increase the distance as soon as I could... Pretty soon I was walking miles and miles...

Food control is important too... Eat healthily at the appropriate calorie level and the surplus weight will come off.

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends here

Good luck with your project.
