New Here Too!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this board and just wanted to write an intro. I am a 44 y/o female from Louisiana. To make a very long story as short as possible, up until a couple of years ago I was very physically fit, working out at the local gym 4x a week. I have had some serious medical problems in the past several years including 3 brain operations for an inflammatory process and just underwent 12 radiation treatments. I have also been on prednisone for many years, but am weaning down and am now at 12.5 mg a day. I had to quit my gym membership as the last week of December I developed double vision and now have very decreased vision in my right eye as well, so I'm considered "visually impaired," but I am determined not to let this stop me from being as fit as I can be. I am looking into a good home elliptical (considering the Precor EFX 5.17i) and we own a Bowflex already, so hopefully can get back on track. I already watch my diet very carefully as I know too many people who really struggle with weight when taking corticosteroids. Also, the weight distribution for those taking this medication is primarily abdominal/upper body/face and I feel a lot of it is fluid type weight. My goal is to get back to my pre-illness weight of 105-110 pounds (I am 5'4" and currently 117 pounds). Lots of good information here, so hopefully I can get some guidance to help with my goal.

Hi Abear (should have known from the SN huh?) :D Hope you didn't live in one of the areas hit by Ms. Katrina!

Welcome aboard Heide very inspiring post. I hope that all goes well and you can stay on the fitness track. If you don't mind my asking what were the op's for???

Hi Jenn,
First operation in April 2001 was to remove a pituitary mass which later was diagnosed as lymphocytic hypophysitis (LH), a very rare autoimmune inflammatory condition. The inflammation from the LH caused my internal carotid arteries to close off, so had to have bilateral bypasses on each side of my head in August 2003.

Thank you and everyone else for the welcome!

Wow Heide you are doing so swesome for having so much challenge put on your plate. You are definately an inspiration. I hope you have continued success and I'm so glad to hear you did not let your med issues cripple as so many people do. Very awesome :)

Count me in as new too. I am a 52 year old male with a 42 year old fiance. We both are working out at home since the cost of the local rec center has become ridiculous. We live in Ohio near Cleveland.

Up until a year ago I went to the gym at least 5 days a week. Good sex and good food seemed like a pretty good trade off for not working out but now I feel like a slug with an extra 15lbs on my body. Enough is enough and I just got back into the routine.

I would be interested in seeing a thread or regular forum specifically for us guys over 50 who want to improve or at least maintain what we have while still enjoying what we have earned.
