new here... need some help

Hi, I'm Nick. I'm 23, and in decent shape. (so I'm told, anyway). I live in San Diego, and HATE IT!! heh... I also drive a lifted F150.
I work 50-60 hours a week as a tire changer/ lube technician, and it gets the bills paid, but not much more... anywho....

As I said, I am in moderately good shape, 6 ft tall at 190lbs. However, most of it is in my torso. I have been slow jogging and watching what I eat, and I have made some progress. (at the beginning, when I decided I wanted to lose weight, I was 6 ft at 340lbs. its been 3 years since then.) i took a year off, because I decided I wanted to be a mechanic, then I decided it wasnt for me, but the military wouldn't take me, because of ADHD. So I started cardio workouts again, and I dropped down to 168lbs, and then took a break to get some weight back. I then got into a very lazy life style, drinking too much, and smoking too much. Again, I then got out of that, and started cardio again.

then in may of this year, 2011, I got injured at work. A left side inguinal hernia. Was repaired, and I was out of work for 2 months. I went back to work with the inability to wear anything tighter than a 38 (even though I can fit 34s, it hurts if I do), and the ability (curse) to drink a 30 pack of beer a night. (developed for dealing with the pain from the surgery, since painkillers are ineffective on me, percoset was not working). ...I am now back on track to get into shape.

I am slow jogging 5 days a week (slow jogging, because a friend of mine, who is a sports med major, reccomended it for fat burning), situps and pushups every day, and attempting to keep an eye on my diet. i have pretty much cut out alcohol, (I'll have a beer or 2 once in awhile, but thats it), i entirely quit smoking, I will have a soda once in awhile, all I drink is water and a glass of milk at night. a gatoraide on every other day.

however, I seem to be at a wall. I want to get rid of the fatty tissue over my pecs, my stomach, and strengthen up my abdominals, so I will have a lower chance of getting another hernia.

So my question is this: Is there anything I can do to strengthen up my abdominal muscles to help protect against another hernia? (I am SCARED of getting another one... the pain alone during recovery was bad enough, but I am mostly scared of another one because I heard from the same sports med friend that I could lose one of my boys if I rupture the current repair, or get another one, depending on the doc's skill, and I will not allow that to happen!!!). I tried following a guide on ehow.com about an abdominal workout where you suck in your stomach as hard as you can for 30 seconds, in addition to thrusting your pelvis up, but that caused a LOT of discomfort in the hernia repair area, and that scared me, so I stopped.

okay, I lied. second question: is there any way I can change it up more, to make the workouts more interesting? It seems like maybe my body has adapted to the workouts I do, and has stopped burning fat as a result).

thanks in advance....
