Just wanted to say hi and introcuce myself a little.
I am kind of the the other end of the scale to what this site is aimed at as I find it difficult to gain weight. What I have found through research and overcoming my own problem can also be applied to weight loss which is why I thought I would signup!
I wanted to help out where I can and also wanted to share an article I wrote recently with the community.

Losing weight is high on a lot of peoples priorities and each year a new diet, exercise plan or fat burning potion is added to the pile in their cupboards. Unfortunately very little of what people buy into actually works leaving the big question of how to lose body fat and stop it from coming back again.
Over the years a lot of myths have been created around this topic causing people to ignore the basics of weight loss. Consistent hard work and a diet plan involving lifestyle change are the only real ways that you will loose inches and keep in shape. Quick fix diet pills and short term diet plans should be avoided as even if they do work in the short term there is normally a rebound effect when you stop the pill or the plan resulting in weight gain.
Your diet should be varied, with regular small meals (4 to 6) spread throughout the day. There are plenty of ideas available at flattenmystomach.com. You should also consume plenty of water as part of your diet as this helps to suppress your appetite and increases your basal metabolic rate. Drinking cold water burns more calories as your body has to use energy to increase the waters temperature to match your internal temperature. To calculate how much water you need, divide your weight in half. You should drink that many ounces of water each day. If you weigh 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water.
Exercise is another important factor when it comes to weight loss. To lose weight you need to get your body to burn stored fat as an energy source. This can be achieved with exercise. The more intense the exercise the more fat that will be burned as a result. Your body will only begin burning stored energy once the energy freely available has been used up and this usually takes between 20 & 30 minutes. Overtraining is a danger that everyone should be made aware of and anyone starting an exercise program should consult a trained individual, normally their doctor or personal trainer before beginning.
Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise should be used to achieve your goals with a balance between the two. Examples of aerobic exercises are running, rowing, cross training etc. Resistance training falls into the category of anaerobic exercise. The reason for this combination is that resistance training will help build muscle. Muscle cells burn calories more quickly than fat cells and you should aim to increase your muscle mass if you want to lose body fat.
