new comer needs help!

Hi there! I am a male and I have recently (over the past year I guess) have unfortunately put on weight. I used to be slim no matter how much or what I eat but now I am putting on weight and I hate it. And to make things worse, my birthday was 2 weeks ago as well.

I am needing to loose weight but I am also very busy with work and what not (I have alot of other commitments too). Sure, I can be depressed for many reasons (not through a fault of my own) but I am a very positive and different person, had a good life changing experience a few years ago and have a better life now

the problem is.... weight. I just got some pictures someone took of me last weekend and damn, im so freakin ugly and.... well, can see the chubbiness.

I want to know:

what is the best way I can loose weight?
How do I go about doing it?
What kind of diets and what should I make or can eat?
How many meals a day?

I used to eat (and this was the problem) alot of frozen stuff and just fry it up on the cooker (as I dont have a grill) but now for about 2 months I havent done that at all. Instead I have been eating sandwiches, pizza's (bad I know), chocolate (bad again I know but I have reduced that), gassy juice (bad I know but again I have cut it down alot), pasta (I make it myself), pot noodle (bad I know but cut down)

anyway please do tell me what I can do to help myself loose weight and feel better about myself.

Thanks and I appreciate your time and experiences! :)

Hi Firehawk,

The only person who can help you lose weight is yourself. People (such as the lovely people on this board) can give you support and encouragement but ultimately you have to make the decision to lose weight.

In my experience, diets don't work! Diets tend to be a quick fix, and once you're sick of the restrictions that the diet places on you, you tend to go back to the old ways and the weight goes back on (with interest usually). I speak with a bit of experience as over the course of 2007, I lost 25kg (105kg to 80kg). I have now been at 80kg for one full year.

You need to consiously make a decision to change your attitude to the way you eat, exercise and rest. Healthy living then becomes your way of life, and the weight stays off.

What worked for me was the following:
1. I was ready to lose weight. By this I mean i made a consious decision that I wanted to get slimmer and if possible fitter.
2. Write an honest (and i mean completely honest!) record of what you eat over a two week period prior to starting your journey.
3. Don't go the "all or nothing" route. Make small modifications at a time. Check your food diary, is there something you can cut out or is there a healthier alternative to something you're having?
4. Add exercise to your life. Choose an exercise that you know you can do regularly. I chose riding a stationary bike. Again, don't try and do hours and hours of exercise when you first start. I started by doing 5 minutes on my bike every second day. I now do 40 minutes a day, three days on and one day off with some weights thrown in, but it took almost two years to get here.
5. Set some REALISTIC weight loss goals. Measure your weight now, and then decide where you want to be and over what period of time. As I say, be realistic. Split your weight loss into monthly and weekly targets. Remember you'll lose more at the beginning than you will at the end, so adjust your goals accordingly. If you're not meeting your targets, maybe they were too ambitious or not realistic, so adjust them accordingly.
6. Stop making excuses! No time, too busy, too stressed, too tired etc are just ways of justifying to yourself that you can slip back into the old ways.
7. Have the occasional day off. Your body needs to rest and recuperate, so let it. Slip in the odd "bad' meal every now and again. One meal here and there will have minimal effect overall, but it keep it to one meal, rather than a whole day.
8. Don't skip meals.
9. Drink water.
10. Check your weight regularly. Celebrate success (not by eating). If you put on weight, look back over the previous week and see if anything could be done differently.
11. Enjoy the journey.

I hope some of this helps. Losing my weight was one of the hardest things I ever did. However, now I enjoy being slim, I enjoy having energy and I enjoy my exercise routine.

believe me i want to loose weight and yes I know I am the one to help myself but I need help from you in helping me as I have no idea about these things which is why I am here......

Firehawk,

I'm not sure what you're looking for. I've listed 11 items in my post that could help you lose weight. I don't advocate "crash" diets or "fad" diets as these simply did not work for me. Making permanent modifications over a long period is what DID work for me. My methods are listed in the post.
