New and unmotivated - want to help me??

Hey everybody! My name is Jenny, i'm 22, from Iowa (ya how boring), and I'm in desperate need of some help here! About 3 years ago, I worked out 4-5 times a week, ate healthy foods, and looked FABULOUS! I got myself into a bad relationship where I was treated like crap, and was under constant scrutiny from my BF - you know, "where are you going? who are you going with? when will you be home?" so I pretty much stopped working out and doing things that I enjoyed. In turn, I gained 38 pounds and looked HORRIBLE.

Before this relationship disaster, I weighed 145 pounds (i'm 5'8"). After B and I broke up, I weighed 183. I now weigh 170, but I would still like to get back to my previous weight of 145, or maybe even a little less (135 or 140, depending on how I look at those weights).

I just don't know what to do to get myself motivated again. I look in the mirror every day and wish I were skinny again, but I still do nothing about it, and I can't get back into my old workout/eating habits. Also, I'm really low on cash lately, because I just moved and I have a LOT of bills, so I can't afford to get a gym membership right now.

Anybody have any suggestions/ideas to motivate me? Thanks for reading, and any responses would be GREATLY appreciated!

Jenny

Read the book "Body-for-Life" by Bill Phillips. It might just change your life.

Also, go to the gym with friends, they will motivate you and you can motivate them.

EDIT: Just seen the part on low on cash. Running outside doesn't cost anything, just dress appropriately, since its getting colder. And you can do lots of exercises with out any equipment at all. Push-up variations, Sit-up variations, etc.

lol my friends aren't the gym-going type - that might be part of my problem. I think the cold is also another reason (excuse) that i don't want to work out. I hate the cold, and I'm scared I'll keel over and die if i try to run in the cold! What if my lungs freeze???? :D

Will doing crunches, push-ups, lunges, etc. help me lose weight though? or will it just help me tone the muscles underneath? I need to shed this layer of chubby I have over my muscles! Bah!

Best method for weight loss is... 1. Diet 2. Cardio 3. Weight Training. All of those combined will get you the body that you want, as well as keeping you healthy.

Welcome to the forum Jenny :)

lol actually, my bf and i just had this conversation about an hour ago. I told him i'd love to borrow his jumprope except i live in an apartment on the 2nd floor and i don't think the people below me would appreciate it. also, i thought i would look mildly funny skipping rope outside at 2am :p

but yes, that is a good idea (should i decide to do it during the day lol)

Hi Jenny,
Welcome to forum. Motivation can only start from within. No matter what people say or do, if you are not mentally ready, you're just not. So don't beat yourself over it. Talking about it like you do now in the forum will help you getting your mental state there. Trust me, once you're there you will know it, because exercising becomes a part of you, not something that you are dreading to do and make excuses not to do. As a matter of fact it becomes something that you enjoy doing and will miss if you are not.
Maintaining your motivation after you got it is another story. That's where all the supports and experience-sharing can help keep you going.

It took me 1 year to get my sister to go to gym with me until she finally the one who asked me how to enroll in one. Now, she keeps asking me why I skip gym-day... ; ; :D
