New and excited...

Hi, I'm a 37 yrs old (end of month), single mom of 3 (7, 4, and 2 yrs), and I run my own businesses. I have been slim and fit most of my life. The few times I was overweight was when I was pregnant and only one other time in my late 20's. I always managed to lose the extra weight by going to the gym doing weight lifting, aerobics, kickboxing and swimming. Now it seems to be getting much harder though. A year and a half ago, I lost almost 40 lbs. This is probably the most I have ever lost - but I took a shortcut. I realized that when I went to the gym, it took forever to lose just 10 lbs and if I tried to reduce my calorie intake, I'd be exhausted most of the time. The last time I needed to lose weight, I couldn't afford to spend 6 days a week in the gym and get exhausted all the time. I had just left my husband and needed to build up my businesses. Anyway, I used diet pills!!! I know, I know...that was really stupid. Well, after I lost the weight I went back to the gym and started working out again.

I have since before the holidays (still haven't gone back to the gym) put on some weight and I need to lose it. I am 5'6" and weigh 165 lbs. My waist measurement is 34 inches. I need to lose at least 11 lbs. So I have joined this forum so that I can reach a goal weight of 154 lbs and lose inches all over the place. I would also like to develop a sustainable fitness plan and lifestyle change. I used to dread my workouts and hated the gym after a while. I would like to figure out how to get my exercise to fit my schedule and to not seem like something I struggle to do. I will start a journal and track my weight loss.

The way I've gotten myself to work out consistently is to schedule my workouts in such a way that it's more of a pain in the butt to not do them, than to do them.

Like for me, I knew I wouldn't work out in the morning, so I changed my work schedule so I could leave early and work out after work but still be home in time to make dinner. My gym is also in a building right next door to mine, so instead of parking at my building, I park in front of my gym so I have to walk past the gym every day to get to my car. The guilt of walking past the gym and not working out is usually enough to keep me from skipping my workouts.

I keep spare gym clothes in my car so if the mood ever strikes me, I don't have to get things together, I'm already ready to go.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, find exercises that you love and do those. If you hate running, there should never be a need to get on a treadmill. If you hate "the gym" maybe find a mixed martial arts studio or a dance studio or something else. You're never going to stick with an exercise routine you hate, so why bother? :)

All that said, welcome to the forums! Check out our diary section. It's a great place to talk about your weight loss plans and goals and to keep track of how you're doing. You're going to do awesome.

Good job, findingnemo, I hope you will achieve your goal soon. 165 lbs is not a big deal, I think with a good plan, you can reach your goal within 2 weeks. Eat more fish, vegetables, less high GI food and trans fat, saturated fat and you will have what you want.

Good luck

I think I hated the gym cause I went 6 days a week and it felt like a punishment. I intend to do Pilates at home some days and go to the gym on others. I like you idea about not going in the morning. I was there at 6:30am Monday to Friday. I hate rush hour traffic, so perhaps I could go to the gym in the evening. Thanks!!!

2 weeks? Really? It's always taken me forever. Thanks for the pointers,

Welcome to the forum!

2 weeks is probably pushing it... You could probably lose it, but losing 1-2 lbs per week is more sustainable in the long run.
