Hello!

I was researching information on weightloss and this website had some amazing success stories and great support from the readers. I am currently at my heaviest weight (280 :nopity: )and i have had enough. Today is the day i start working out at the gym provided to tenants at my building. i have no clue what i am doing but i am going to start with walking 45min on the treadmill at a reasonable pace and do some light lifting for the last 15 minutes in hopes i can begin conquering my most insecure area...my arms. If anyone has some pointers.... please share. i am willing to try anything. im 5'8" and i wish to get down to atleast 150. i have no timeline because i want to do this right... and keep off the pounds i've lost.

I agree with you! I don't have a timeline either (but the sooner the better!). I think it's more important to make changes you can keep for the rest of your life than go gung-ho at a regime or lifestyle you have no intention of continuing when you reach your goal.

What sort of changes can you make, nutrition-wise, to your current/previous way of eating?

Do you have an exercise routine you like, or are you looking for tips on that?

Thank you for responding MsBubbles. I use to eat out all the time. pizza.... french fries.... pad thai.... a large order of beef Pho.... etc. all things that i knew were not good for me but i had the wrong mind set eating those foods... "im already fat.... whats this meal gonna do to me??" but now that i have realized that my heels are hurting because of my weight... i knew that i had to make this change for myself. So i have been eating alot better as of yesterday. salads....chicken breasts.... WATER LIKE CRAZY! i want to cut out soda all together. As for working out... i did 45 min on the treadmill on a incline and burned 500 calories. and i felt great.

A friend of mine wishes to lose weight as well so we are doing a little friendly competition.... the person that loses the more weight by January 25th...WINS. the prize is still up in the air, but a competition will inspire me to work harder. If you know any amazing calorie burning work outs.... and maybe some meal tips that are easy and low carlorie.... i would love to hear your thoughts.

So this may sound funny... but have you ever heard of skiwalking? It's a very good workout. If you live in an area that is very hilly, or if you have something like a ski hill or a big sledding hill that all the kids go to in the winter, or if you live near mountains, take some ski poles with you (make sure they fit you for your height - when holding the poles straight up and down, your elbows should be bent at about a 90 degree angle), and walk up the hill like you normally would, but with the poles. It's a very good workout for your arms, and gets your heartrate up more than just a normal walk would.

Hi Lyfe!

Along the same lines as Chelsea Morning, my particular sport is inline speed skating, which burns 600 - 800 calories per hour and makes me really hungry. Since that's not always possible (not everyone can wants to take up skating, or can find a proper coach to learn, locally), I would also recommend you doing some weight-resistance training to build muscle, because that not only burns calories while you're doing it, but afterwards at rest, too. Sort of like putting money each month into an investment account with interest!

I know what you mean about restaurant food! It tastes so good! But it sounds like you're making some smarter choices now, though. I was horrified to see how much sodium was in all my favorite restaurant foods. I get edema, so when I reduced my sodium intake I also dropped some pounds, presumably in fluid weight.

You are smart to listen to your body and to want to ease the load on your painful heels!

I feel like i can be successful with this lifestyle change. i think i have the ability to learn to love working out. i worked hard these passed two days at the gym. lots of cardio... a little weight resistance. i downloaded an app that helps me track my calories and gives me pointers. My only weakness will be my Pho addiction. i love love love my chicken Pho. haha.

I appreciate you two giving me pointers and words of encouragement.

For me it has taken a combination of exercise and dieting. Everything I have learned is in these threads:

Eat only foods that are good for you. cut out the junk and exercise as much as you can with sweat rolling of your head every day

Hi Lyfe,

Good to hear you have made the choice to change your life around and you have a challenge and buddy to get there too! I have a challenge with my bf and i managed to lose 2kg last week! His not trying to lose weight but the prize is cool =) So keep trying to maintain your diet and do regular walking. Consistency, as someone mentioned to myself, is the most important part. Some days you just may not wanna do it because you are not seeing results, but i note to you you are progressing>> its like trying to break a rock with a hammer, with every hit you get closer to cracking that rock! lol funny analogy but im sure you get the drift =D

All the best!! Keep going strong! You can do it =)
