Need variety in fitness routine

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to how to keep the variety in my fitness routine? I run three times a week and do strength training twice a week, however I want to stop the strength traing as my arms are begining to get too defined for my liking. Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions about exercises I can do to replace the strength training but maintain the toneness I have now? I do not want to do cardio five times a week because it gets boring just running or being on the elliptical. Thanks.

Abi.

Sports, hiking, etc A nice set of defined arms is fine. Seems to me your looking of ways to stop excercising lol

I would say that cross training can take the place of strength training. ACSM recommends that you participate in physical activity 3-5 days per week. You just need to mix things up so that you don't get bored. Try tennis or racquetball. Also try changing your running routine a little to keep things new and interesting for you. For example, try interval training or running with a partner.

Weight training and cardio

I would recommend enjoyable exercises such as basketball, racquetball, rollerbladding and swimming.

I would also suggest adding a day of lower body workouts. Squatting, leg press, calves and quads. This will keep you toned but won't be the monotonous cardio workout. It will also boost your metabolism and help in burning fat.

Any further questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Hi,
I wouldn't suggest stopping the strength training. It's an important part of a fitness program, and chanes are you'll lose the muscle you've gained if you do. You can change your workouts so you don't gain any more though. What are your weight workouts like right now?
A fitness program should be enjoyable and full of variety. How about taking some classes at the gym? Spinning, aerobics, etc. There is so much outdoor cardio. I don't know what type of environment you live in but there are so many options: hiking, kayaking, biking, tennis, rollerblading, trail running, swimming, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, basketball, etc.
I hope I've given you some ideas.

what about sports?

I really recommend soccer or volleyball ;)

But those are my fav. sports so thats why I said that lol .

I think bicycling is very fun. You can progress at it to where you can just ride all day and basically travel around on your bike! Just be careful, most people aren't very nice to bikers on the roads for some reason...

But if you have kids, there's all kinds of sports you can play with them. Mine really like baseball and soccer.

There's tennis thats always fun. And also if you get the chance do the marathons or walk-a-thons and raise money for charity and hospitals and stuff once you get in shape for them ;)
