Need some advice...

Hello everyone. I am getting a bit desperate. Not really sure where to start here, but I guess here is a little back information for you.

I am a disabled vet. I have taken quite a beating through the years in the military. I have injuries to basically my entire left side (from shoulders to toes). As a result of that, I have some pretty severe mobility issues. I use a cane all the time, and still have pretty substantial issues getting around.

I was always very physically fit and worked out all the time. Now, after several years of being injured, I am having some pretty serious weight problems. I watch what I eat with still no help at all. I have spoken with several VA dieticians and doctors. The dieticians had me do food journal entries for a while, and I still do them, but they were unable to find any major faults with my daily consumption other than they say I really don't eat enough. The doctors (including 2 physiotherapists) have told me that they can not recommend any types of exercise for me for fear of aggravating my numerous injuries. I really want to swim more, but do not have consistent access to a pool.

Honestly, I am not even sure what I am trying to ask other than does anyone out there have experience with any of these types of issues and maybe have some friendly advice for me? At this point, I have almost given up on the VA doctors as they are primarily useless. No one seems to be able to help me out. I even went as far as to go and talk to the GI docs about that gastric bypass surgery, which coincidentally I do not qualify for (not really a big loss after researching that surgery a bit more... it scares me with all of the complications that can arise from that surgery). I want to try and find some way to exercise, even if it is very slow at first. I have to, honestly. I am 6'6" and somewhere around 360lbs. It's not like I am gaining weight very quickly. In my prime, I was around 275. And I have crept up to my current weight over the course of about 6 years. I just need to find a way to curb the weight gain, and maybe lose a few pounds here and there. I don't want to start developing more health problems due to the weight.

Any advice you guys/girls can offer would be graciously accepted. Thanks in advance.

That's a tough one. Is it an option for you to see a civilian personal trainer? (A qualified one with a university degree - not a weekend course). It might be worth a try for the sixth opinion. Did the physio docs give any limitations to your right side? If you could do water workouts that sounds like a great option. Even with limited access. Sorry, I'm not much help. Others with more experience will chime in, I am sure.

I would have to look into the personal trainer. Never really thought about that one. No, the physio docs didn't really give me any limitations to my right side, But either way I still have to be careful due to my back. But I have swam in the past, on and off again, whenever I had access to a pool. I have always been a fish in the water, so I love to swim. I really need to work on getting a more reliable access to a pool.

Its been said but I will say it again. Get a GOOD PERSONAL TRAINER. Not as said above someone trained over the weekend. Start with small changes. For example start with drinking eight glasses of water. Think about what you want do you want to cut down on the meat you eat? What do you want how do you want to eat? Why is this important because it may effect the direction you go. For example I lost 100 pounds and did it by eating raw. Now not everyone can do that. However I removed a lot of the food from my life that trigger me.

Good luck we are here to help
