Need honest opinion about weight loss goal.

I am overweight and would like to lose 90 pounds.

I want to lose 2 pounds a month but I have been told that it doesn't sound as though I'm taking weight loss seriously and I'm unmotivated. I have also been told that two pounds a month was the only healthy way to lose weight. I'm not sure who's being mean or nice in this situation. Is 1 - 2 pounds a month normal for someone who really wants to lose weight? Please be honest.

It's "normal" to lose as much as you can through a SUSTAINABLE lifestyle change.

Forget about pounds lost. Don't even look at a scale.

Make a commitment to eating a little better, and exercising a little more. It will yield dividends if you are honest with yourself.

When you can sustain the little changes for a month, then try eating a little better yet again, and exercising a little more yet again. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Don't look at a scale, and don't go on a "diet." Put in the work, sustain it, and good things will happen.

I meant two pound a month.

@Ian: Thank you for the advice but I was looking for an answer to my specific case. Do you think 1 - 2 pounds a month is an unmotivated goal for someone who really wants to lose weight?

you could lose 2 pounds in a month by taking your entire diet from last month, and eating 1 mouthful less each meal.

if that's the goal, then there's nothing wrong with it.

What is Normal ? everybody is different and no I don't think it is lazy, yes many people expect to loose more but then a lot of those then fail because the reality does not match with their expectations.

I dont' agree with your friends, I think you should do whats best for you. I think traditionally 2 lbs a week is the healthy loss that most people go for...doesn't mean that has to work for you. If I had done that whole 2 lbs a month like you are, years ago, I never would have gotten the weight that I do. As long as you do something, thats great!

I would have to agree with Korrie as well. If you are concerned about the rate at which you personally need to lose weight at, you should consult with a health care professional. Aiming to only lose two pounds a month doesn't really put you on the path to health and fitness. Like someone said above, it would be similar to a couple less bites of the same food while you're still practicing the same lifestyle. If you are sedentary most of the time, just starting to exercise would burn more than two pounds a month without changing your diet. I would be looking to change how I eat, and how I exercise as I'm sure your goal is overall well-being and not just losing weight.

Ive been at the weight loss thing for about 2 months and I just don't think I'd have been successful so far holding myself hostage to a pace of any kind, fast or slow. The reality is that you're going to succeed or fail based on making wholesale changes to what you'd been doing. There are no secrets. Eat less, move more. Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.
