Need advice :)

I am wanting to get more ab definition. I do Pilates about 4-5 times a week and I play tennis about once a week. Does anyone have any advice about what I can do? This isnt a very recent pic but my stomach still looks the same. Thanks!

Hey TIFF!.......I think I seen you in a different thread!..............> :)

Begins with properly constructing a diet plan (designed with your goal in mind) and the adjoining a exercise program to compliment this diet.

Have you figured your level of calories needed per day with activities in mind? This is where it litterally begins----and above all else is the most important element.

HEY! TiFF.......Climb this fricken CLIFF and give your goal a big SNIFF and then one day......you will take a huge WHIFF and your former self will be a STIFF!

I have seen some of your posts too you crack me up LOL!

Well, as far as nutrition goes I dont really have a plan. I try to eat healthy but probably not as healthy as I should. (Thankfully I cant gain weight no matter what I eat lol) Do you have any suggestions how I can find a nutrition plan that will work for me? I have been working out for about a year and I am seeing good results everywhere but my abs havent changed much in the last 6 months.

If you don't gain weight no matter how much you eat, then in simple terms I think you need to start lifting heavy weights so you can turn more of your weight into muscle and lower your body fat. As your body fat goes down your abs will show more. I was somewhat like you when I was younger, my BMR just adjusted to whatever I ate and my weight pretty much stayed the same no matter what I ate. I could not gain weight until I started lifting.

im the same way

that could be the key right there... as well as a weight training routine as dswithers talks about

Thanks! This board has been really helpful! I have learned alot more about fitness by reading the threads here! I want to start a diet plan, weight training, and I would like to start running a few times a week. I have an Eliptical machine do they do much good? I forgot to list info about my body earlier:

24 years old
Female
5'5
about 104 lbs
bodyfat - my scale says 14% (I know thats low)

whoa.. 5'5 and 104?? that seems anorexic! but you dont look it in your pic. you look great actually, but i hear you about the abs..

you really just have to play around with nutrition and see what works for you... i dont count cals or anything every single day, but i pretty much eat the same foods so i know what i'm getting (gets old though)

i would certainly hit some weights..

I know!! It sounds anorexic to me too but I definitely dont look it lol I have been reading alot about nutrition since I have found this site I want to learn more about weight training too.
Would it help to increase the time I work on my abs when I do pilates?

you know, everyone says for abs to show.. lower body fat.. lower body fat.. i agree; however, you need some muscle under there too. If your bf% is really 14, they should show. imo, the weights could be your best friend.

You are not at 14% body fat, but that's a good thing. 14% for a female is real low...real low. Everyone that says you need to lower bofy fat to get abs are....right. I'm sure you're core is strong from all the pilates and tennis, but you need to cut that fat out of the way to show them.

Having a strong core but no visible abs is like having a dirty window. There may be a beautiful landscape on the other side of the window, but you need to wash the grime off first. It doesn't matter how green the grass is, you still can't see it until you windex that bitch. haha

Good luck, you've reached the tough part.

Except for the word bitch, that is a pretty good analogy. :D

The pic is sooo small.

Great post! I think we've seen a lot of individuals (specially runners) who are at a low bodyfat but their abs are not present. The abdominals should be worked with increasing resistance just like any other muscle group. And while pilates is good in the sense you're getting activity and adding resistance to a certain extent, it doesn't beat weight lifting.

Tif,
I'm not nearly as fit as these other guys but a little advice from a former fat guy (well I was 195 and now I'm 175 and working on a lot more muscle.
Dynamic movement to get those abs moving. I do a lot of axe chops (whatever you want to call the exercise) with a rope attachment on a cable machine (i hope this makes sense). basically i've noticed that any exercise that gets my stomach twisting with resistance increases my def a ton. hope this helps.

Everybody has pretty much covered it. People do get caught up in wanting their abs to show, and they forget that there has to be something to reveal! I myself got caught up in this. Focus on building up the abs just like any other muscle, and once you have done so, cutting the fat will be easier and more satisfying, once you see what you've built up. Good luck to you!

The only thing I have to add is not to trust the body fat scale. I don't think they are accurate at all.

I'm on the same quest as you, to get my abs to show (I can make them show a tiny bit if I flex just right, but I mean standing, relaxed)

...and hey, we don't live that far apart, hello neighbor

Thanks everyone for the help! I have started a diet plan and I am going to start weight training. I will let you all know how its going!

theGOOCH, Really?? Where do you live?

Yeauh, Cincinnati! Woot woot!

...and the Bengals are breaking my heart again this year...will I ever learn?
