Need a kick in my game

Hi, I'm 44 year old male. I've been up and down the scale all of my adult life. Have kicked some bad eating habits, undone some damage and learned some things about eating and nutrition that has made a big difference for me. But I'm not quite where I want to be.

In Late 2010 after once again regaining some weight that I lost, I went on quest for the the biggest loss of my life. So over the course of about a year from October 2010 to October 2011 I lost about 75 pounds. 50 or so came off in the first 5 months, then I stalled for a couple of months and then the remaining 20 or so almost exactly one year later. I went from a high of 270 to a low of 195. I did this by controlling my calories and upping my exercise, which is almost entirely a pretty intense sweaty use of elliptical machines usually what adds up to about 8 hours a week. I got used to being able to consistently lose 2 pounds a week if I did both dieting and exercise.

As great as that was it fell short of my goal which was 10 more pounds of loss. I was hoping to hit a weight of 185 which is the very top end of what I have read is my healthy weight and a weight I have only been at briefly as an adult a couple of times, but haven't been near that weight in a good 15 years.

Then in November it stalled.Work got intense, my exercise patterns shifted and my eating slipped a little and between late October and mid April I regained 20 pounds. I've been trying to knock off the regained 20 for over two months ago. Following this intense elliptical usage and calorie restricted diet. The difference is that things are going really really slow. Where I used to be able to see 2 pounds a week. I'm now more like 1/2 a pound a week. So in the last couple of months, I am down -- but only 5 pounds.

Meanwhile I have taken other advise that should help. I'm almost completely off fast food. I completely gave up diet soda in February. I've pushed more protein into my day and morning, I often eat lean chicken or a 400 calorie salad with chicken on it -- for breakfast. I have reduced carbs and eat almost no bread. I restrict other junk and I aim for about 1600 calories a day but probably get closer to 2000 by the time I snack on a few crackers here and there.

Any ideas to getting closer to a 2 pound a week loss in my game?

Mike, first thing... great job on losing the lbs! Second thing, a 1/2 lb a week is still a loss. Being 44 myself I know that it gets harder and harder to lose the weight as we get older. I was shedding at 2 lbs a week, then stalled myself. If you can continue to get the 1/2 per week, be happy and continue what you are doing.

I use the elliptical also, and understand the love hate relationship with them! Try mixing it up a little with your workouts, try some HIIT or some weight lifting.... get out of a normal routine and see what happens.

Good luck!
