Need a jump start

I started a new career about a 1 1/2 years ago and it has been a big adjustment. One thing I have used to cope with the stress and busy schedule is food. I have always been an emotional eater but it has gotten worse. I have gained about 40 lbs in the past year and I am miserable. I have quit working out and have just let myself go. I am here looking for motivation and support.
 
start yourself a diary - it's one method of getting support...

and make one change at a time - it seems less overwhelming than trying to do 5 things at once... just keep reminding yourself that you didn't gain the weight overnight, it won't be lost overnight - and pace yourself...
 
You are in the right place for support... I'm really glad that you joined the forum. I totally second Mal on the one day at a time thing .. Unforunately , for just about all of us, the weight wasn't put on overnight and will not come off overnight. Slow and steady wins the race. You can do it!
