need a good calorie counter

its been brought to my attention that the calorie counter ive been using might be a tad out XD

might be due to my weight (about 345lbs) and it not having been designed to work out calories burned at weights as high as mine, or thats its including my bmr as well

i was thinking of getting a heart rate monitor but i was wondering, i know when i use a x-trainer or treadmill i burn of millions more calories according to the gym than a exercise bike and ive always assumed its because my weight counts much more agenst me when doing those. but my heart rate rises to almost the same level when on a bike, despite the gyms machines telling me i would burn about a third of the calories i would on the treadmill or x-trainer

so yes, gt myself a little confused, some advise and a good calorie calculator would be great please :)

When i say calorie counter i mean something that works out how many calories im burning off through exercise

Gym machines are generally reckoned to be very optimistic regarding how many calories are being burned and you're quite right that similar effort on different machines give wildly different 'calories burned' numbers.

You're also quite correct that at a heavier starting weight the calories burned is going to be higher than a ligher person.

A good monitor is going to be expensive but you might look at Polar. I got the most basic $50 unit to keep an eye on my heart rate. But they also do more complex models $200+ that will even download to your computer your heart rate/calories burned for the day. Since you're starting on a long journey with weight loss and fitness you may well find the investment justifiable. If I'd bought one at the start of my journey I'd have gotten a more capeable model.

I chose Polar because that's the brand of monitor that my gyms equipment interacts with.

I wish you good luck on your journey, it's not a fast proces. Think of it as like paying off a car loan. Keep chipping away at it and you make a little progress every month.
I've advised a number of people of the best investment for weght loss as being a decent cook-book. The kitchen is truly where you lose weight. Not the gym ;)

Honestly I'd just count your calories and calculate your BMR and whatever you burn is just extra...those things are just so unreliable :(

I'm looking for one as well.

I have an iron man watch/hr monitor right now...and I'm not sure it can count calories - moreover, I've lost the HR band!

A few questions:
(1) can you buy HR bands without watches?
(2) do these watches with HR monitors/calories counters count for the entire day? Or just during workouts?

Well my monitor (cheap) only measures my heart rate when I tell it to.

The battery life is 2 yrs based on it monitoring my heart rate for 1 hr a day. But I usually only wear the band to do a cardio workout and don't bother too much with the watch part.

If you were going to be using one frequently I'd certainly look into batter life when you read reviews.

This was mine
quite basic, but suits my needs (and wallet)

Personally, I don't really feel you need a heart or calorie monitor, unless you want it for convenience. There's lots and lots of tools out there on the internet that will give you a pretty accurate idea of how much you're burning. Of course, you should check at least two different sources, to test for accuracy.
I think that Livestrong.com is a website that many people here use to help them with their daily plan. Of course, I always recommend checking 2 sources
