Neck shoulder pain

I have a pain in the neck/shoulder that has been going on for ages... I reckon even over 12 months.

Been to 2 physios in that period, did all required exercises provided by physios and still this pain comes back. It comes and goes but is always there (if that makes sense). I mean the intencity goes up and down. At it's best I can pretty much do and move wothout limitations. At its worse, nearly everything I do, is done with a high level of uncomfortableness, some movements are completely no go.

This pain is muscular and weirdly switches from right to left. This is the reason why I think I'm not able to get rid of it completely.

Anyway, I want to ask if anyone has the same symptoms of a pain switching from one side to the other. And also, does anyone know anything about MRI scans? I would like to get it looked at from the inside! I've had X-rays a couple of times but has been inconclusive.

I'll leave it at that, if I can think of anymore to add I'll do it soon. Hope to get some replies.

Hi Bennos, I'm a "physio".

Definitely get an MRI. You can see damage to ligaments, muscle, and tendons that you cant see with Xray. If the pain switches then it might be a number of things MRI could help to discover. Worst thing about MRI is:

1. being in the machine. If you dont like confined spaces then it might bother you a bit but if you want to end it, the tech will usually stop it at anytime. Some even have a button that you get to have during the whole thing that you can push yourself that will end the scan and bring you out of the chamber.

2: Having to hold still so they get good and accurate images.

Doesn't sound like muscle though. I'm sure you have some type of movement impairment or loss of normal muscle function to some degree.

Hope you find some answers soon.

Had another physio appt yesterday. My 4th one and still without any improvements. I brought up the subject about an MRI and the physio said they usually do about 4 to 6 treatments, if no improvements by then they refer their patients to the doctors to get an MRI (or any other scan) referral. Physios are not authorised to refer their patients to get scans (in Australia).

Looks like I'm headed to the scans again. He mentioned that MRIs are very expensive so the doctor will usually get a lower cost scan before they recommend an MRI. I've got an X-ray already, I guess there is the CT or CAT scan before the option of an MRI.

Anyway, that's just an update. Never know if this thread may help someone else in the future.

definitely you need to do MRI to sort out the problem. for the mean time, i think it would be best if you take a day off with liftings until the pain is totally gone to avoid complications.
