NBFE initiative

I was wondering what you guys thought about the National Board of Fitness Examiners and how the industry, especially NCCA accreditation and IHRSA are responding to it?

Wes,

I have been unable to find any articles about IHRSA responding to the NBFE. I did e-mail them asking their position on it. They responded with: we have no position on the nbfe initiative.

I know that ACE, NSCA, NASM, and ACSM are not happy about the creation of the NBFE. I guess they will wait and see how this all plays out. I did hear a very interesting correspondence between Dave Depew and Pam Kufahl on accreditation and the NBFE. You should check it out.......go to then go to the bottom of the page and hit the podcast icon to listen to the conversation.

In the conversation you'll hear Pam talk about a trade show that has (of now) transpired last month at a trade show in Chicago. A five member panel talking about the NBFE, IHRSA, and accreditation. The transcripts have not been released as of yet. However go to and click on the contact us icon. E-mail Pam Kufahl about the transcripts and she'll put you on her list to receive it when they get released.

I hope this helps. Have you signed up to take the national boards? How do you feel about this initiative? I have found it very difficult to find an discussion board where people discuss this particular topic.

take care

I really havent been keeping up with it all. I figured the NSCA will contact me if I need to take a National board test. I think it's a good idea, and from the people who I have talked to on the NSCA forums, they all do to. There's just way too many bad trainers out there, making a bad reputation to the Personal Training field.

Perhaps this new exam will weed out trainers who take an at-home test, pass, and then never due anything to continue educating themselves; just simply train people the way people trained in the 80's. (let alone having passed without neccessarily ever having seen a client!)

You took the words right out of my mouth. I think it's good to have a set standard...which is why I appreciate the national exams you have to take for Athletic Trainer.

I concur, having a national standard is a great idea and a necessity in our field. I believe its way overdue. I just don't understand why there are so many trainers complaining about how it could be devastating to the industry.

Even before the NBFE was formed at least two states that I personally know of formed committees to find out exactly what personal trainers do, how their certified, and how they should be regulated, etc.

I think that in time all states will license or regulate in some manner and the NBFE exam will be a requirement of all trainers. Subsequently, it will weed out all the imposters and fly-by-night certifying organizations. It will raise the bar and standards of all trainers and organizations who wish to practice in the industry.

Wes, dont' hold your breath for the NSCA to contact you about taking the NBFE exam, because its not going to happen any time soon!
