Is this for real, do some people really have bigger bone structure in that they will never drop down and look skinnny or slender ..

Or do we all have just about the same bone structure buildup and Size which inturn get coverd by the amount of fat or musle you have

Must be true!

Of course people must have different bone structures and shapes. Absolutely!

I know for a fact I have an very big chest, something that makes all my skinny little buddies (especially here in China) envious. When I was wrestling and bodybuilding regularly I had a 52 inch chest. True, some of that was muscle and fat, but even with the fat and muscle gone the bones will still be there. I believe (not being a scientist here) it is similar to height. Some people are built longer than others. Bottom line. Makes sense some people would have very small bone and body structures and others would be much bigger. So there must be some truth to it.

Though I do hear what you are saying. Movies, TV and even our own parents (and ourselves) have tried to rationalize being overweight by saying "You are just big boned". But compared to my skinny buddies, even if I were anorexic, I would be huge in the rib cage in comparison. I have been told by many of my perpetually thin friends they would die to have a big barrel chest, yet no amount of bad eating or weight traning can get them that big.

Luck of the draw? Genetics? Diet? Who knows..... But absolutely I think people can be "big boned" or at very least built in different shapes and sizes. Definitely much more to it than just fat.

Yes of course we all come in different heights and shapes and frames and bone structures.

I feel the question you are really answering is whether should you bother losing weight if you am big boned and therefore will never look slim & slender. I think you can, no matter how "big boned" you are. You might never look like Victoria Beckham with her 23 inch waist, but you still can look slim & slender.

When I was bigger I used to think I was "big boned" too, as I had broad shoulders, a big chest and wide hips. At my skinniest my waist measured 25 inches, I was a 10% bigger version of Victoria Beckham. So much for my "big boned" theory. Honestly you won't know how you'd look until you lose the weight. Don't let this "big boned" thing deter you.

Yeah some people definately have bigger bones than others. Some people have heavier bones so they can weigh more but be perfectly healthy if a large percentage of their weight is in bone.

This is similar to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. You can weigh more and be healthy if the percentage of muscle is higher relative to fat.

I see allot of amazing transformation pics here and really have to think that most if not all can slim down .. but when i see a 350lbs football player all muscle i wonder if he can slim down just the same ..

I really have my doubts that i can slim down, but i have a year to proove myself wrong :troll:

Slim is relative....

A big guy can be slim and fit and still be huge. Thats just a given. Its all relative. Once all the fat is gone and you are toned up, you will look fit and slim, but that doesn't necessarily mean skinny or small. You can remove all the fat, but the bones remain the same.

Personally I never want to be skinny, I just want to be healthy and fit looking for my body shape. Being a big man definitely has its advantages in my opinion. Definitely do-able for myself I figure and I am sure you will do it too!

Put Arnie next to Brad Pitt. Both slim, both fit, both pretty much fat free. Arnie always be bigger than Pitt, he's just built bigger. I might think Brad Pitt looks skinny, but I would never accuse the govenator of that.... Especially not to his face! :)

I just look at it in terms of body fat percentage. Some people who are clearly in the mid 30's will say "I'm not fat, I'm big boned!" Obviously that's absurd, they are carrying excess fat.

Everyone can look sculpted and lean, that's the best way I could put it for you. Not everyone has small bones. That's an issue of structure.

Some people have thicker/sturdier builds, and that adds weight. But I've always had an aversion to the "big boned" phrase, because it is so often used as an excuse for bad lifestyle habits. To be truly, authentically big boned, is not to be soft and round! So to speak.

Good points in this thread :)

I'm a 5'1" tall female and I am what is considered big boned. When I grasp my right wrist with my left hand over the widest part, my thumb and forfinger won't meet over my wrist - I have about 1/4 inch of space between them. My ideal weight is somewhere between 118 and 124. At my most slender adult weight, I was 112, and I couldn't keep that up without training like a fiend. I only had between 12 and 15 pounds of fat on my body, yet I was solid and looked like I had some substance.

My mother is a waif - she has small bones and she was about an inch and a half shorter than me before osteoporosis shrunk her down. 120 for her is overweight as her ideal is around 105. She is one of those people who, when she is at her best weight, looks like a strong wind would blow her away.

Just because a person is big boned does NOT mean that they have an excuse to practice an unhealthy lifestyle. When it comes down to it, you might be able to pull off 150 pounds and look trim, where someone of similar height and age, but possessing a lighter bone structure, would only be able to carry 135 to 140 pounds. The difference in what you can carry in terms of weight really isn't so much. Maybe 20 pounds a the most extreme. But I've heard people try to justify a burden of 70 pounds or more, saying it's just because they are big boned.

God Bless,

what about the reverse .. peeps how can eat eat eat when they want what they want, and not gain an once, i have freinds like this, creeps me out

That's not a reverse of skeletal structure - that's a matter of metabolism. Some folks have a very fast metabolism and they have a hard time taking in enough carbs to keep them going. I wish I was one of them ;p

Funny how that works.....

I always seem to find this "grass is always greener on the other side" scenario myself.

Although most of my life I have been very overweight and unhappy about it, I have had more than my fair share of friends DESPERATE to gain weight. Even at my heaviest I had buddies so envious of my size, yet they could eat till they burst and weight train till the ends of the earth and they will always be a "little" guy.

I would have thought being chronically thin would be far superior to being chronically overweight. Yet all my "can't gain a pound to save their lives" buddies disagree. Whereas they take weight-gain formulas, eat special mass building diets and struggle with endless hours of weight training to try to get "bigger" all I need to do is exercise more and eat better and I can lose weight. To them it seems us big folks have the easier option..... as bigger folks, we may not agree, but that sure is the way they see it.

Go figure...

But yeah, it is creepy and makes me madly jealous.......

Big bones of fat?

There's an important point to get here (Mikitta said it): Some have bigger bones than others, but you can't say that a larger overweight comes from big bones alone.

If someone with a 40"+ waist claims that they are just big-boned, it's time to take a look at a skeleton...
Surprise - apart from the spine, there's no bones in the waist ;o)

The biggest bone in your body is the one going from your hip to your knee - if this bone is very thick, lets say 2" in diameter, then how big is the percentage of bone in that part of you?

Sorry for ruining anyone’s excuse, but there's a limit - even to big bones.
If it looks like fat, and feels like fat, it probably is...fat!

Happy New Year Everyone!
