My second post, exercise and diet questions

Hello:

I have been doing this lower carb diet for about a week and walking everyday. I have been pretty sedentary for quite a while due to an injury back in 2002.

Question1:

Walking, Can I expect to loose weight around my belly if I am only walking for exercise. Also dieting with a low carb type diet.

My diet, I have started this low carb type diet that I have put togather myself. A typical day of food for me is like this. 2 eggs and 2 bacon with coffee for breakfast. Today it was a salad with 1/2 cucumber, 1/2 tomato, small amount of onion, 1/2 can tuna, about 2 cups iceberg lettus, shake or 2 of parmasan from kraft, Shake of garlic powder, 1 TSP real bacon bits from a jar, with some homemade dressing made from oliveoil and viniger with a package of italian seasonings.

Would you say that this salad for lunch is too much food? Keeping in mind I am a big person that is used to eating fast food. Is this too many carbs?

I guess I am trying to get a idea of what my portions should be when eating healthy salads like this? Is there such a thing as too much salad?
Is this too much? I would like to loose 8-10 pounds each month if possible.

I know there are some smart people that have lost weight here on this forum so if you are a success story and can help....thankx

Jay

I say this is step 3 for me joining this forum because step 1 is changing the things I eat.
Step 2 was walking everyday. Today is day 7 walking and I cant even do a complete mile.....but I will keep going till I can....I have made up my mind here!!

Step 3 was joining this forum to get support from you wonderful people. I have used forums for my hobbys and like the help I have their so why not loosing weight....right

Hey Vancouver,

The fact that you joined, not eating fast food and walking. I would say you are doing great!

Some would say to knock out the bacon, but you know go gradual at first.
imo, too many restrictions and people tend not to stick to it. The fact that you replaced fast food w/ a salad. Though, some would say be careful not to load the salad w/ too many cals.

Also, you can't spot reduce. Though, i believe i have read, the last place you gained wt, is the first place u will lose wt.

Welcome and good luck.

I cant comment on the carbs thing....I know jack about food....I know Im a huge fan of salad (dont like tuna in mine though) and my fav dressing is the one you described.

I just wanted to say Im on day 14 of consecutive walking and Im so so proud of myself...the only thing I've ever done that many days in a row is smoke lol

Kudos to you for keeping it up....your well on your way to making the walking habit

If you lose enough weight, eventually you'll lose it around the belly. The type of exercise and the particulars of your diet aren't that important.

I have started this low carb type diet that I have put togather myself.

There are some good sticky threads over in the Nutrition section that would be a place to start. Try http://weight-loss.fitness.com/nutrition/13065-easiest-nutrition-guidelines-ever.html, for instance.

The downside to a build-your-own plan is that you have to build it yourself. :)

Would you say that this salad for lunch is too much food?

No. By my math, you're only at about 750 calories after lunch (depending on how much olive oil went on the salad), and I'd make a wild guess (based only on your description of yourself as big) that maintenance for you is closer to 2,500.

At the beginning, making an effort to cut back and/or eat healthier foods will probably give you good results. If you stop seeing the results you want, adding calorie counting in might help. Since you're worried about eating too much, I'll caution you about depriving yourself too much. You need a plan you can stick with.

There's a calculator here (Calorie Calculator - Daily Caloric Needs) that will give you some idea of how many calories you should be eating. As long as you eat fewer calories than your body uses, you'll lose weight.

I would like to loose 8-10 pounds each month if possible.

If you're currently at 250 pounds or more, that's probably not an unreasonable goal. Figure 1% of body weight per week as a reasonable loss to aim for.

Good for you! I like to walk, myself.

Allyphoe and the others. Thanks for the info and I will try to keep things in moderation so I can stick with it. I just got back from my walk today and its already getting easier and I feel tired but also have that natural high that you get from a good workout. I admit I was huffing and puffing and the muscles were stinging just a bit but I reached the mile I wanted today and feel good about today.

After the bacon is gone in the fridge I will replace it with another meat like hamburger. Is this better then bacon? I can George forman grill it pretty quick. Since I am on this type of a diet I find its hard to find food that gives me the horsepower to sustain me till lunch. If I cut out meat from my diet that leaves me few low carb foods for fuel. I cant have oatmeal or cereal or milk or any type of bread so its meat. I can live without those things just fine as long as I can have meat. I am planning my life change for perminent so I know I will be having these foods at some point as nobody can go without good foods (carb foods) for ever but for now I need to get my weight down and endourence/energy level up. I will check out those links you have provides for me and we will see how it goes.

Cheers everyone

One more quick question. After I got back home from my walk just now I got up from my computer and just about fell over lightheaded. Really really dizzy for a moment till I sat back down. What would cause this? Do I need to eat something sweet or a fruit?

Honestly, I think you might get better low-carb specific answers on a low-carb board. I know with low-carb, you want to be sure to get enough of your calories from fat (rather than relying on the only other option, lean protein), but I have no specifics for you.

There's could be various reasons:
Make sure you have enough fluid, make sure you cool down from your walk, low blood pressure, lastly low levels of gylcogen. Make sure you have enough in ya in regards to carbs.

But if it keeps happening, you might want to get a physical.

Those r just some that i remember.

I had a banana and am better. Just needed more in me. I am drinking about a gallon of water a day almost. So I know I am hydrated.

Thanks again

Jay
