My Personal trainer issue

Hi all, when i first joined my gym, a very nice gym, i got the whole assment thing and was happy with what the personal trainer said and have been getting on with it but now i dont really know what to do. I dont really know if im getting better or not or made any improvements. I feel a bit shy to go back to the trainer and ask for help my gym doesnt make me feel very welcome although it is nice. I feel a bit alone and dont feel like i get enough support, or updates or any helpful tips. For the money im paying i expect a bit more.

Does anyone else have this problem? i have been using other websites to get tips but i think my gym should do a bit more so i dont have to look to other places, is that a silly assumption to make?

What gym is it? How much do you pay a month?

Before I knew anything about anything I joined a Bally's and felt confident after the introduction from a trainer. Although now that I look back I realize that all she really did was point out the cardio machines and show me how to use weight machines. They never even showed me any free weight exercises :( I didn't know that was bad at the time and didn't really make much progress other than getting better abs. I felt kindof like you, I wanted to ask questions but didn't know who/how to ask. So now I just use my free weights at home and learn some of the safer exercises online.

I'm not sure what most people expect from gyms  I would think that there should be knowledgable employees there to answer questions and who can tell if someone is doing something incorrectly.

If you're paying for a service and it is not up to snuff, you have every right (maybe even a duty) to make it known. I say duty because chances are there are more people like you who aren't making themselves heard - and as a result nothing will change. If you and others stand up for what you want, then change can happen. And if it doesn't you at least know you tried, and can move on and find a gym that better suits you. Good luck. :)

Are you actually paying for personal trainer services?
These guys/gals don't work for free. It's good you were given an assessment. That should have put you on the right path. However, if you are in limbo in the gym than either you will have to figure things out by yourself or pay one of the trainers to get you started.

Don't get discouraged though....we all have been in limbo one time or another.

You should not feel weird about asking for help. That is what they are there for. They should be willing to give you some information and answer a few questions. A lot of gyms do have bad personal trainers, I have witnessed many of them and just have to shake my head. If you don't feel right asking, there are many educated people here that would be happy to help I am sure. Me being one of them. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through my website. Don't give up!!

Quote trainerty : are you paying for the service?

No i'm not paying for the service at my gym which is ESPORTA but i just got the feeling when i had my first assesment that it would be a continous thing  which the gym would provide, but then again not sure how they would contact me and update me as there is no emailing or forum service on their websites. Which makes places lke this really useful. Thanks all. Does anyones gym have this service??

I am sorry that you are not feeling "welcome" at your gym. That's a shame.

The gym that I work out offers new members an "orientation" (up to 3 depending on the membership you get). The session is just that....an orientation...we show them how to use the equipment properly. It is NOT a personal training session (although a lot of similar information is given).

When I give people their orientation, I show them the free weight area, and let them know that if they would like to learn free weight exercises, I would be happy to show them, but the orientation is for the machines. If people get multiple orientations, I suggest that they use one of them to learn new exercises.

We do not do regular newsletters or send out any information like that (unless something is included in the monthly bills) - so I do not know that we give any written updates or tips - but someone is always available in the club to answer questions and help out.

I think that if you need help with something at the gym, you definitely should feel comfortable asking someone that works there to help you. If you are blatently doing something wrong (or potentially hurtful to you), I definitely think a trainer should approach you to give you tips. If you are looking for a new program or something designed specifically for you, you should hire a personal trainer to work with you.

While I feel that our gym is very welcoming and friendly, I do not think that we can be "supportive" to every customer that comes in. Everyone's needs and wants are so different. I think that if you voice your concern to the gym, they should be able to point you in the right direction. Hopefully, after speaking with them, you will feel more welcome and supported.

Good luck.
