Project Me :)

I probably should have introduced myself in the newcomers forum, but I figured this was as good a time as any to start a journal. I came across this forum the other night and spent a solid 3 hours just reading and reading and reading... well you get the point:p I have to say, I've never seen such an incredibly supportive group of individuals - you seem like a wonderful group, and I"m so looking forward to participating on this forum.

The brief low down on me is as follows...
I'm a 30 yr old woman who up until the age of 25, never had to think twice about weight. In fact, I was underweight up until that point ~ 100pounds at a height of 5'3". Then like the curse my mother warned me about, anything I ate after the minute I turned 25 seemed to lodge itself around my midsection and lower body:( As of today, I'm about 132. It's not the number on the scale I am bothered by some much as my overall 'health'. I know the midsection is the most dangerous place to carry weight and can lead to health issues late in life. I consider 30 to still be young and frankly, you're never too old to take better care of yourself!

My eating habits are pretty good, I watch my fat & cals, try to get enough protein, and work fruits & veggies every chance I get. The missing element is the exercise component. To rectify this, I've joined a gym which opens in a few weeks - this is a huge step for me - I'm incredibly self concious, I absolutely hate working out in public.

Now class... I'm hoping this will be a group project with lots of participation:rolleyes:

And so it begins -> Project Me

Congrats on starting a new life! We are here for you! I also don't really like the gym scene, and at this time I am unable to really "get to the gym" so I work out at home. But just remember that once you get yourself to the gym....once you walk in the door...there is no turning back and before you know it a whole hour has gone by! Good Luck and you can add me to your cheering section!

I want to welcome you to the sight
you will get alot of support here
i know how you feel about being in public places working out i have same problem but if you can get a buddy to go with you it will be alot easier

Thanks so much everyone!

Well today is off to a bit of a later start than anticipated, but I'm off & running now. I'm off to visit my neice & nephew who got new puppy yesterday. My sister is bbqing me a nice lunch of grilled chicken and salad so at least my food is off to a good start today!

Quick question for anyone who might be reading, does anyone here uses fitday to track your food intake? Or is there a better site to track on?

Have a great day!

I've tried FitDay for tracking calories (intake and output)...it works pretty good. The only problem is they don't always have what I'm looking for. For example, I needed canned cream of mushroom soup, but they didn't have the low-fat version I used, so the calories they entered was a little higher.

I've used both fitday and sparkpeople... and they are both good -spark has a few more bells and whistles and a bit more "sparkle" as someone called it - I called it the annoying happies...

I did a side by side comparison for two weeks and honestly felt that spark was giving me higher calorie counts consistently... which i actually needed to keep me honest.. and it was a lot easier to enter custom foods into spark than into fitday.. fitday sometimes whines when the info on the label isn't just so... and won't let you enter it - it was just too frustrating to deal with...

If you google on free calorie counters, you'll find a bunch of them that are free.. and it's really a matter of which one is the most comfortable for you - because for it to work - youhave to want to use it.

I did come across this one - the other day -I haven't experiemented with it yet, but it's gotten some good feedback from people who have

Welcome, and good luck with everything , you can do it, you've got all of us to help you through everything .

Food today:
1 banana
1/2 whole wheat omega-3 enriched bagel
2 tbspn organic peanut butter
salad with tuna & fat free italian dressing
1 nectarine
1 cup ceasar salad
3 chicken wings

It's days like this I'm not a big fan of fitday. Unfortunately, I don't have all these items programmed into my 'custom foods', but it has my intake breakdown as follows:
900 cals
41% fat
29% carbs
30% protein

Now granted, today is kinda my 'cheat' day because I get together with friends for wings, but I only had 3. And I had to use a generic measure of mayonaise-based salad dressing on fitday. But the organic peanut butter was the killer:eek: 16 grams of fat in 2 lousy tbspns:eek: Am I better using a lowfat butter? I'm not generally a bagel-eater, but I was in a rush (Monday morning  ). Usually my breakfast consists of fruit and cottage cheese.

Any suggestions on how to get my ratios in check:confused:

You can just google a food ie "calories eggs" and you will get a bunch of different calculators. Here is another one. I use a bunch of different ones.

Food was terrible today was terrible! Forget today, food this week has been terribe! The stress of preparing for my business trip on Friday is going to be the death of me  I have so many things to do both at work and at home before I leave Friday, I really don't know how to get through it all:( And, to top it all we had an impropmtu birthday gathering at our house tonight for my f-i-l so of course, pizza, cake.... not good.

Just documenting the food for the sake of consistency:

1 banana
3 coffees
salad with cucumbers, orange peppers and fat free ranch dressing
1 necartine
2 apples
2 slices pizza
sliver of cheesecake -> and my tummy feels really gross because of this

Such a completely unbalanced day - there's no protein in that list!!!

Hopefully there will be a gym at the hotels I'm staying in for the duration of my business trip. That would be a nice way to get back into the swing of things. Another great thing is that we will be walking for all day, everyday on this trip. The food however concerns me. I guess my safest bet in terms of nutrition over the course of my trip is to stick to grilled chicken and salads.

Tomorrow's another day

off on my trip tomorrow morning! What a hectic week  And I had a horrible day today:( But tomorrow I"ll be in San Francisco, so hopefully the change of environment & all the walking will do me some good

Have a nice trip !!

Thanks:)

Well, I'm back and what a trip it was. The day we left I started feeling 'not so well', by day 2 I had launched into a full blown alergy attacked - congestion, burning eyes, my voice sounds like Darth Vader:eek: As far as eating, obviously we ate out for every meal. It's ridiculously difficult to eat 'clean' when travelling I've discovered. We went to all these fancy restaurants with heavy cream sauces on everything (executives like to live the high life I guess), so my options were limited. However, where ever possible I always had the grilled chicken with roasted vegetables, or fish when it was available. Finding fruit proved to be quite the challenge, and it was very very frustrated seeing as fruit is usually my breakfast and snacks throughout the day. When I couldn't find fruit I opted for smoothies but even then, I questioned the content of those. Despite my best efforts, the scale read 3 pounds heavier when I returned last night    This morning it had gone down a pound from there, so maybe it's water weight??? I'm still very ill with these allergies, even a week later, so excerising is kind of out of the question right now because I can only breathe from my mouth due to the congestion. Walking is also likely out of the question because we've literally spent the last 5 days walking all day every day, so my feet are beyond sore, it hurts just to walk around in my house.

I'm glad to be home, more than I can describe. I'm planning on going to the grocery store in about an hour to restock my fridge with healthy fruits and vegetables and get back on track. I'm proud of how I ate, given the situation with travelling, but now the real work begins;)

Welcome to the Board PM!

I joined a gym too - I had never ever thought about joining one before, and to be honest, I didn't know much about them! Six weeks on, and I'm a gym rat - I love it!

going on trips always kills our diets. You can find 57 ice cream and pizza shops but not a salad bar in site lol.......... don't beat yourself up too bad its just part of the vacation scene......

speaking of ice cream... I'm 30 years old and I had never tried Ben & Jerry's ice cream that everyone faves about. Yesterday of all days, I kicked up some at the grocery store - what the heck was I thinking  All I can say is that I'm glad I found it late in life at a point where I have the self control to enjoy it, but not over indulge. Had to get that off my chest. I'm not going to dwell on it.

My bf gets back from his trip to Europe tomorrow, I'm excited, and a bit disappointed I didn't lose any weight while he was gone. Also, the gym I joined is behind schedule in construction and did not open as expected which feels likes a bit of a setback for me. I really wanted September to be a new start for me.

Goals for this month:
Diet: eat fish at least twice a week, likely tilapia as it is easy to prepare.
Chicken twice a week, and plenty of vegetables.
ABSOLUTELY NO WHITE BREADS - this was the worst part of my trip. We would go to restaurants and I would be starving so when they brought the bread basket to the table (which never contained whole grains) I gave in.
Cut back on the caffeine - I've been terrible with the amount of coffee I've been ingesting lately

Exercise: Provided the gym opens soon, cardio 3 times a week for half an hour to start (I'm in terrible shape cardiovascularly)
weights: twice a week.

Personal: Try to find a balance between work & home. I've worked very long hours these past few months and it is taking a terrible toll on my body in addition to the minimum of 3 hours I commute daily.
