My hatred for weight watchers.

Sorry need to rant lol

One of my parents recently took up the weight watchers diet. I find it absolutely terrible and breeds yoyo dieters.
It's not so much the getting together and weighing thing. THat can be motivation for some people but you could do that in a house with a group of friends. Its the meals, the snacks and anything else branded with the weight watchers name. People shell out on these ready meals when they could make their own recipes, learn about nutrition and train themselves.

My diet isn't a temporary diet. I've changed what i eat forever. Will you weight watchers keep buying the ready meals forever? NO! You will reach the target weight and then go oh well i'm there i can stop now. The nutritional value is also non existent. Goddam pro points!!

Again apologise for the rant but these 'diets' really bug me.

I disagree.

Different things work for different people. One of the regular users here has had great success with Weight Watchers and it sounds like she's learning to change her habits. And she mostly cooks her own food by the looks of things (she photographs her food). One of the things she's come away with is "snack on fruit"- she's not exactly buying Weight Watchers apples, is she?

Any diet can be good or bad for anyone. While I'm not on and don't think I need a "program", I think Weight Watchers is one of the better ones- they seem to encourage good nutrition (at least the people I know who have been on Weight Watchers seem to eat nutritiously) and it seems to be a version of calorie counting, in a way.

Personally, I'm only going to knock a diet if it's going to harmful to someone's health. If someone wants to eat nothing but a cup of rice and work out 5 hours a day, I'll call them on it (or any other fad/ crash diet). If someone wants to try the Twinkie diet, I'll advise against it. Weight Watchers in and of itself isn't going to be damaging to health, and helps a lot of people.

well, I tried WW once, years ago, can't remmeber why I went off of it...and I'm not going to "defend" WW's....but what I can say is that weight watchers is really a low calorie program. Lets face is, lower calories is how we lose weight. I think the points program incorporates fat as well, but I don't think the concept is that awful. Also, you don't have to buy their products. They give you a list of foods and their points and shows you how to figure points for foods not mentioned on their list. ALSO, I do know that they have a program, can't remember the name....but they do teach you how to eat long term as well, once you've lost the weight.

Its not really THAT bad of a program...IMO.

Ok i may have come across a bit wrong...

The problem i have is instead of paying a company for their notepads and special books you can pick up a packet of food and look at the calorie content as well as the other nutritional value that is in it. I just feel bad that one company is raking in so much money to weigh people.

Ok. Say you're on this diet and you have none of your 'tools'. You go to the supermarket. You look at normal food but it doesn't have a 'points' sticker telling you how much of it you can eat. I feel if people went to a simple healthy eating class and learnt how much you should be getting each day. I also noticed that people have to be told when their 'points' need to be lowered.

Just an opinion guys and i just don't get it. From what i've seen the majority of people use this to lose a few pounds for summer and see it as a kind of chore to do. Eating should not be a chore.

I agree that it seems like sort of pain, but it obviously works for some people.
I have a feeling that it's one of those things that's just "no big deal" once you get used to it.
However you personally feel about it, you should respect their system, because it's one of the oldest systems around, (if not the oldest) and has helped thousands and thousands of people.

Eating is easy. very easy. too easy! Eating right for these people has obviously been a problem. And they have a solution. Sure it might take work. So what? How else can you lose weight? Self Control and Work seem to be the only choices.

You're coming off as incredibly preachy, I must say, here and elsewhere. People are here to get support to lose weight, not to get a lecture.

Weight Watchers works for some people. And no, "healthy eating" isn't enough- my weight fluctuated within the whole spectrum of the overweight BMI category until I started calorie counting. I've always been a very healthy eater, as I was taught in school and noticed all the time in governmental health information (lots of fruit and veg, keep the basis of your diet starches, a meat serve a day, three serves of dairy, limit processed foods, fat, and sugar. Yes, I really ate the food pyramid. It really got me nowhere). Would you rather them not lose the weight because calorie counting's too hard (I say this as a calorie counter who's been quite successful), they don't want to weigh their food, they can't do maths, etc? Is it such a sin that they find it a chore if they improve their health? How is it so different to be told what to do in a "healthy eating" class as opposed to weight watchers? (Watching others, it would seem there are ways of figuring out "points" without whatever with you)

If it works and it's healthy, it's a net benefit. Reserve "hatred' and judgement for starvation diets, juice cleanses, etc.

I was expressing an opinion for a system that i feel breeds people that are convinced they cant lose weight as soon as they're off it. Thats it.

I also was not saying just eating healthy was the option as in i eat greens but i have a kfc on a weekend sort of healthy. I count calories. I'm just saying it's easier/cheaper/more long term to calorie count as opposed to point count.

How is it preachy?

Well, you are a brand new member just coming in and throwing out opinions that are pretty powerful..and most people don't know you so it comes off as preachy. usually people become a part of the community before throwing themselves out there like that.

Actually been a member of the fitness.com community on the fitness forum since 2005. Merely expressing an opinion on something and if my advice/opinions aren't wanted i'll just stick to my own fitness. Good luck.
