My fave dish could be bad.....help!!!?

im hoping this is ok for a good balanced diet meal, as its my fave dish :)

Ok so its mince beef, with a small amount of olive oil, then let it brown over add chopped up onion, stir for a few mins then add curry powder to the mix stir again then add gavy, stir and leave to simmer for a few mins then finally add baked beans to the mix stir it all then leave to simmer again for 5 mins

during all this you have rice cooking either brown or white

any thoughts on that kinda dish? or is it bad? :s

Well, it sounded fine to me until the whole gravy part....gravy is typically just fat...but it sure is tasty.

true but i mean you have to have some fat in the meals so...im guessing its a good balance of everything :s i hope!

It doesn’t sound too great but if it’s your favourite meal the best thing to do is try and adapt it as much you can to make it healthier. For a start, use the best lean steak mince you can find and if you’re adding baked beans then try using the low salt and sugar varieties as BB’s tend to have very high sugar levels.
Not sure if you can get a low fat gravy but I’ll bet you could find some way of making it a little healthier by making it yourself using stock or something.

It’s terrible to have to cut your favourite foods completely but by breaking them down and trying to find alternative ingredients you might be able to come up with something better.

Out of curiousity, how do tomato sauce (beans), curry powder and gravy taste together?
If you can’t taste the tomato sauce from the beans much then maybe try using Haricot beans instead

well i mean it tastes lovely and the only reason i guess i put the gravy and the beans in is otherwise its dry so maybe i could find some kind of replacement for the juice, any ideas? of course the replacement would need to have some flavour, otherwise it will taste mainly of curry lol but sorry i should of been more clearer with what i put in, everything i put in is of low fat or the best sort, so it is lean mince and low fat baked beans!

You ask it this dish is bad, it sounds okay but... it depends on your diet I guess?

Breaking it down; (and if I were cooking it for myself) mince is fine daily, but make sure it's very lean (which typically has around 10-12g of fat per 100g) and that you are eating a healthy portion amount. Olive oil is fine, but is that just for cooking? Once heated olive oil loses its goodness factor. Use spray oil which is has 100 times less fat in it! Chopped onion is good, you could also add chopped garlic too maybe (for extra flavor)? For gravy mix just switch to stock cubes like Oxo (although they may not be available in the US?) or use Japanese Miso paste to make the gravy with (the organic stuff tastes far supreme to the small sachets)! Baked beans are mostly high sugary carbs, and again in moderation can be eaten daily, but you could try kidney beans as a replacement. And finally the rice, as long as it's wild rice or basmati rice then either white or brown is good (and again watch your portion size). All in all you have the makings of simple chili con carne :) ...
