my evolution...

Hello there :) Thank you for taking interest in my diary!

I've been trying to lose my hips and thighs ever since I acquired them in 7th grade. I've been through quite a bit while trying to slim down, but my weight has never gone over 150 pounds. I finally made it down to 120 lbs in January 2006, which is where I would like to be again. I lost my weight then by walking a lot during the day- I worked at a large furniture store and also took 3 mile walks every day after work. I started going to school again in January last year and have gradually gained the weight back since then.

I've done an incredible amount of research about exercise and weight-loss, and I've tried quite a few different tactics on myself. I decided to go vegetarian last year, which didn't quite work, then I decided to go full vegan this year. The main problem I have had with eating is that I want ANYTHING that I tell myself I can't have. I also crave things like ice cream and meat when I drink alcohol, so I've been trying not to drink since it brings out my bad habits... I tried a juice feast about a month ago, which is different than a juice fast. The juice feast is a body cleanser where you eat only liquids so that your body can focus on ridding itself of toxins. It is a little easier to do than the Master Cleanse because you get all the calories you need each day, but you need to juice your foods right before you eat them, and I wasn't at home often enough for it. The vitamins and minerals from the food are soaked into your body so quickly that you get hungry faster, so you need to juice every 2 hours or so.

I haven't found success because I haven't completely stuck with anything, but I've noticed that I am eating healthier foods ALL the time. I think that getting to a particular diet that you can stick with, and that suits you takes some time. I am now sticking to a vegan diet about 90% of the time, with at least 40-50% raw foods. I keep slipping, but I'm hoping that using this forum will keep me on track to get to a 100% vegan diet, with most of it coming from raw foods.

I've built quite a bit of muscle over the past few months while exercising to lose weight, but I've only gotten larger because I haven't been losing fat as quickly as I've been building muscle. Something I recently found out is that fat and cellulite are very different, so the way to get rid of them is different. I found out that cellulite can accumulate from the buildup of toxins that come from bad foods, so even very thin people can have cellulite. I have very muscular legs, but unfortunately I have quite a bit of cellulite covering them! I will be doing the Master Cleanse for the next week and I will try to update this diary every day so that my progress is documented. I've been reading about the Master Cleanse for the past few months, so i know there will be strange things happening to my body as it is ridding toxins. If any of you has advice for getting past cravings, please feel free to comment :)

Advice for living vegan (or just eating healthy!):

* Pre-make a salad in a large ziploc bag, and keep it in the fridge at all times. This comes in so handy when you don't have time to make a salad!
My ingredients:
Spinach
Romaine Lettuce
Carrots
Cucumber
Tomato
Broccoli
Celery
I also sometimes add black beans to my salad so that I get protein, plus I don't need dressing if I have beans with it.
Fat-free Italian dressing is the healthiest dressing to use. There are also salad spritzers now, which are an easy way to reduce the calories in your salad.

* Make a pot of vegetable soup at the beginning of the week. Use veggies that you like so that you know you'll eat it! I usually use black beans, corn, squash, tomato, carrots, etc.

* Try having sandwiches without meat! I love hummus, mustard, tomato, romaine lettuce, and cucumber sandwiches- and I don't even miss the meat because the hummus is quite filling! Also try using Nature's Own double fiber bread, or Mrs. Baird's high fiber bread- the more fiber the better.

* Always keep fruit on hand- I have an entire shelf in my fridge dedicated to fruit because it keeps it fresh longer and I enjoy eating it cold a lot more. I almost always carry an apple with me during the day so that I can grab it when I get a craving. I also like to make a large fruit salad to keep in the fridge every now and then, but it goes bad faster that the veggie salad so I have to eat it faster.

* Wash your fruits and vegetables as soon as you can after bringing them home from the store. If they are ready for you to eat, you'll be MUCH more likely to eat them!

* Just try to make it out of the store with ALL healthy foods... you'll feel amazing when you're checking out in the grocery line and the people ahead AND behind you have all junk food! I never looked at what other people were buying, but now I usually take a glance because it makes me feel good ;)

Thanks for reading! More to come :)

Welcome to the forums, and great job on creating a journal!

I've built quite a bit of muscle over the past few months while exercising to lose weight, but I've only gotten larger because I haven't been losing fat as quickly as I've been building muscle.

I think most would agree with me that the only way to gain muscle is to be on a calorie surplus. This is the only way I can imagine that you can simulatenously lose fat and gain muscle.

Good luck on the new life style. All of us here are willing to help :D

Hi evo!

i love veg and fruits now too.... big difference from 4 years ago where I'll just pig out on KFCs and Macs. My fridge is always full of veg n apples/mangoes.

For cravings, I usually have a cup of hot tea and sip slowly. Then I'll turn to my computer and look for that image of how 2 pounds of fat looks like. That pretty much turns off the craving. But well there are times where I allow myself that little mini snickers/dark choc and that's it.

Ha i was checking out of a counter once and there's this girl behind me who kinda glanced at my healthy basket and then bit her lip when she looked back at her own basket of chips and snacks. Tot that was funny.

Hope u find yr way around and get tons of support here. I did. :)

Thanks deepgreen and pinkydolly! I appreciate the support so much!

I've gained muscle because I don't have as much time to work out now, so I try to make up for it by working out harder. I do eat more now, usually good foods- but they don't help if it too much of them!

I'll definitely remember tea as a crave-stopper, and the image of fat--- that's an excellent one!! Thanks pinkydolly :)

Got through my first day of the master cleanse! I'm about to drink my senna tea and hit the bed. The drink actually did keep me from being hungry ALL day long! It really surprised me, and I'm really excited about ridding myself of toxins :D

Still feeling good about the cleanse... I want to keep up with my progress and my water weight, so I might be posting them every other day or so.

Weight: 143.4 lbs
Body Fat: 27.9%
H2O: 52.6%
BMR: 1447
Muscle Mass: 35.4%

With the master cleanse you usually lose a lot of water weight, then gain half of it back after you stop the cleanse. I'm hoping that I can keep it somewhat stable.

Hey! welcome to the forum :)

We are similar in many ways....the master cleanse being the most obvious lol. I hope that goes well for you. The cravings are manageable. I actually think its easier to handle cravings when you know you can only drink the lemonade. It's much harder to rationalize to yourself that you CAN have that candy bar. I have been hungry sometimes, but I also haven't drank the full 12 cups of lemonade on any of the days. I just can't get used to the taste lol.

Your tips for veganism were really helpful :) . I have been a vegetarian for about 4 months now, but I am planning on going mostly vegan when I get off the cleanse (and as much raw vegan as I can).

Good luck! I'll definitely stop by here to see how you are doing. :)

Thanks Lisa and Adam :)

I actually haven't been hungry yet- as long as I'm drinking the lemonade, I'm ok! It is quite strange to go to the freezer for some ice and try desperately to ignore the tofutti-cuties (vegan ice cream bars) I have stashed in there!

Lisa: It seemed a lot easier for me when I decided to go vegan because I had already learned what foods to eat by trying to go vegetarian. My biggest downfall would have to be stress from school- I would get out of a test and tell myself I'd earned something... I've been getting through it though :p

I remember reading that doing the cleanse will give your taste buds a break, which will make it easier to eat more bland foods (like some veggies). Not looking forward to having a better sense of smell though... I already have a great sense of smell and it's usually not a good thing! I'm really hoping that the cleanse will clear my face because I've had the "20-something" acne for the last year. Glad to see your face cleared up, Lisa :)

Another vegan tip: I've always disliked pasta, so I recently started using spaghetti squash instead of pasta for those types of dishes. You just cut the squash in half, bake it in the oven, and put your spaghetti sauce or whatever in the half squash. It's all stringy, so it seems like pasta, but sooo much more healthy! I love adding mushrooms and cut up bell peppers in it, so it has a nice strong flavor. :D

Thought I should say... I changed my little weight-ticker to 150 pounds because that's how much I weighed a week ago. It's a lot nicer to look at the round number anyway. :)

The third day is hard!!!! I feel very empty... And I hate looking at the mirror and not seeing anything happening :p The saltwater cleanse this morning actually wasn't painful, but it might be different when I use sea salt tomorrow.

It wasn't until day 7 or 8 that I could see a difference in my body, though it isn't a huge one. I weigh a lot more than you, though, so a little loss will be much more visible on you. Just be patient, you will see it :) .

Oh and I didn't realize you were on the third day. That is a really hard day. I had TONS of cravings that day and I was reallllly tired. But it pretty much gets better after the third day.

Whew... that's what it looked like from your diary- thanks for letting me know! I've been feeling pretty drained today, but the heat probably has a lot to do with it :p

hope yr skin improves soon! I had that in the early 20s... started clearing up after i hit 25 or so. It improved after I eat lots of veg n fruits.... yum yum.

it's summer where u stay now? drink more water!

Thank you! The sun seems to help clear it a lot- I'm not exactly sure why. It has seemed to get better since I started eating correctly. :D

Yes, it most definitely feels like summer already! I live on the Texas coast, about 4-5 hours north of Mexico. It's been 90 degrees lately :p Thanks for the water advice! I haven't been drinking it as much because I've been doing the cleanse, so I've been drinking lots of lemonade. Well, I'm going to go use my elliptical before I have to get in bed- anybody who's looking for some cheap exercise equipment should go to thrift stores.. I bought this elliptical for $25, and I think it costs around $220 new :)

Good luck with the cleanse. I look forward to reading about your journey. Keep it up!

Oh and the advice about spaghetti squash made me very hungry...time to go shopping ;-)

And Spaghetti Squash is only 66 calories per every 8 ounce serving :D Good stuff!

I'm sooo hungry right now... I've been walking, working on my elliptical and doing a bit of pilates, so my body is asking for calories now :(

Gonna go make another lemonade drink and hit the bed... I'm spending the day at the beach tomorrow and I KNOW all of my friends are going to try to get me to drink while we're there. I haven't told them about the cleanse because they completely bash every new diet I try. I'll need some strength/willpower to get through it!

Have a lovely Friday, everybody :)
