My Diary

Hopefully this helps me stay committed and become less likely to procrastinate about continuing to lose and keep off the weight, and also a great way to not only get feedback, but even new ideas about it. I realized a long time ago that actual weight loss isn't easy, it isn't just a 'quick fix' and it means that it's a lifestyle change in order to become healthier. Many people I know bounce around from one diet to the next and never keep off the weight, and many never lose more than 5 or 10 lbs in the long run. But, I like to think that I've already made major changes, due to not eating nearly as much as before. And probably most noticeable for me was when I learned earlier this week that if I ever want children I will either have to adopt or get a surrogate. I usually tend to eat my emotions; nothing seems to comfort me like ice cream or fried foods in large quantities, but when I felt like eating my pain, I instead ate a banana and went on an hour and a half jog, then talked to my boyfriend about what was bothering me. So I like to think that I've at least made a little bit of progress towards changing my lifestyle so that I keep the weight off.

I read that answering these questions is probably a good idea, so here it goes :)

-- How much weight do you want to lose? Amount isn't really thought about, I just want to get healthy and fit into regular clothes properly.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight? A year or two, hopefully as quickly as possible.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)? Exercise and proper eating, but mostly exercise

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal? This forum, and hopefully a few coworkers who have similar goals.

-- How realistic is your goal? I think it is very realistic.

-- When will you start? Probably sometime this week I will be able to start a workout regimen.

Other questions you might want to consider answering in your diary, to get you started, and avoid that white page writer's block are: (stolen shameless from Geam's diary)
What is your current height and weight? 5"1 210 lbs
If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? 180 lbs? Maybe 160 lbs?
At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? At least 190 lbs
Why do you want to lose weight? To become healthier, and I'm honestly tired of always being the fat girl everywhere.
Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? Nope
What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? I procrastinate A LOT, and I LOVE fatty/sugary foods
Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? A mixture of learning that eating your emotions is the only way to deal with them, and growing up, extra weight was seen as a good thing (it meant that you were being taken care of). And that to my family a vegetable was either an onion, bell pepper, garlic or potato that was mostly cooked with the meat to enhance the meat flavor.
What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Learning to talk/express my problems in a constructive manner and to get into the habit of exercising.
Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? Yes, I had lost about 100 lbs. What worked was exercising and my boyfriend's mother constantly made me self-conscious about my food intake, so I learned to eat in smaller portions.
Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? I worked for 2 years at a job where from 6:30am-5:00pm I would sit down and assemble small pieces, the drive to and from work was 1 hour each way, so by the time I got home I was mentally exhausted and it would already be close to night time.
What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? People telling me to do what everyone else is doing. I will admit that I have authority issues/don't like being told what to do. My cousins tried to constantly get me to do various diets with them but I constantly denied it due to seeing that they weren't losing weight and knowing that they were just going to go on a different diet within the next few months.
Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? I would probably try it. I don't really know how effective it would be, but I would try it.
Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? I cook almost everyday. It is mostly meat with some type of rice or pasta on the side and some type of veggie or fruit to go with it whenever it is available. I grew up in a Hispanic household and my boyfriend is Hispanic as well, so I cook a lot of fried foods.
How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? Not very often. Usually we either get pizza, Chinese takeout or some fast food (mostly Taco Bell or Subway)
What are your three favorite foods? Homemade chicharones (pork rinds?), sushi, pistachios.
What are your three favorite restaurants? Ichi Maki, In and Out, and I don't really have a third.
What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Eat more fruits and veggies.
If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? Flat (or close to) stomach, no more apron pooche, no more back fat, less fat on my arms, my thighs not touching as much.
Do you eat when you are not hungry? Yes
Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Not anymore
Do you hide your food or eat in secret? Sometimes
Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Yes
Do you eat as a reward? Sometimes
Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? Yes
What do you normally eat for a meal? Working days: A sandwich or muffin, Dinner; Some type of meat, either rice or pasta and usually some type of veggie or fruit.
Non-working days: Breakfast; Pancakes or eggs or cereal with a piece of fruit. If I'm hungry at lunch; A sandwich or salad. Dinner; Some type of meat, either rice or pasta and usually some type of veggie or fruit.

What type of snacks do you eat? Usually baby carrots, sometimes a doughnut at work, or nuts if available.
In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? Occasional jogging, but hopefully I will have an actual workout regimen starting this weekend.
Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? Home
What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise? Jogging/running, dancing, swimming
What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? I am my motivation
Do you have rewards for certain goals? Yes

Today: I had a breakfast sandwich for brunch and went on a 2 hour walk. Not really what I wanted to do, but it's better than nothing I guess. Hopefully I'll be able to do more tomorrow since I don't work.

Haven't posted in 12 days (almost 2 weeks!!)
The first few days I couldn't post because either I was working overtime and had no time to post, then the remainder of that week I had no internet access. And the past few days I'll admit that I purposefully didn't post because I hadn't ran or jogged due to weather. But on a good note, I haven't been over eating and I have been eating a good amount of fruits and vegetables. I went to a birthday party on Sunday and I had a thin slice of cake, but I like to think that I made up for it by dancing for 3 straight hours. Monday I worked and even though I had bought a workout DVD that I know I'll do, I didn't do it because I was running on 2 1/2 hours of sleep and I went to sleep when I got home.
Currently my thighs and feet are killing me, but I am going to do the workout DVD when I get home. I am actually excited because it is Billy Banks and I really like his videos; makes me sweat but doesn't make it feel like I'm actually doing a lot, and I get to get out aggression by punching and kicking.
I can't really remember the food I've had the past 12 days, I know that I have been eating a lot of bananas and carrots. I remember at the party I had some rice and a piece of ham (didn't like it) and a little bit of the potato salad but I did have a good amount of fruit. As for the prior days, I know I had pizza and the leftover pizza. A 6 inch Subway sub, it had chicken, red wine vinegar and was stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, cucumbers and spinach. And the rest of the days I had a muffin, lots of chicken at home for dinner.

Yesterday I woke up late and my boyfriend was 2 hours late for work. He woke up with an attitude and I was in a bad mood the rest of the day and didn't want to do anything. But I forced myself to do the dishes and after that I figured since I was already cleaning I might as well do the laundry too. Because our washing machine is broken and the landlord still hasn't fixed it, I did the laundry by hand, but since the dryer is still working I was able to just toss the laundry in the dryer and did the workout DVD in between loads. I was still hurting from yesterday's workout, and today I still hurt but not as much.
I ate baked chicken for dinner with a side of rice and corn. For "dessert" I had some baby carrots.
Today is perfect swimming weather, but I'm just going to go home and do the DVD again, I don't know what I'll have for dinner and I will admit that I am being naughty today by having 2 doughnuts instead of a banana or oatmeal. One thing I am excited about though is that I can't wait to move. We are going to move back into the city, so it will be SO nice to be able to go for walks/jogs without having to worry if there is a sidewalk or not. I remember when I first moved here we lived in the city and my boyfriend really helped me lose a lot of my original weight by forcing me to walk all around the city with him during the summer. He was unemployed and I worked part time at a temp job 3 days a week. He used to force me to go out and walk with him so that I could 'know where everything in the city is'. But by the end of summer I hadn't really noticed how much weight I had lost, just that the walks became easier and easier and that we always took the same route. And then one afternoon a guy came up to us and told me congratulations on losing so much weight. He explained to us that we walked by his house almost every day and he had thought it was very cute and admirable that two 'young kids' walked everywhere holding hands and that he couldn't believe how much weight I had lost, then he followed it with saying that he could really tell that there was a lot of love between us. It made me feel good and I no longer had to be forced to go walking after that. I started enjoying it more and more until I was the one having to almost force my boyfriend to go for walks and then jogs. So I am excited about moving back to the city so that I can start walking/jogging again in a comfortable environment without worrying about being hit by speeding cars.

I did the DVD workout again, although this time I did it right when I woke up and I felt like it went horribly. I couldn't keep up and felt like an elephant trying to do ballet, but I made it further in the video than I had been getting before. Probably the most unhealthy thing I've had since my last post was I breakfast sandwich at work today while on my break. But besides that, I have had a Subway 6 inch sub (chicken, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, pickles, cucumbers and red wine vinegar), chicken with pasta, eggs, carrots, strawberries, and oatmeal. It has been raining all day, so the weather is very sucky right now.
Also, I spent all weekend fishing, sweating and getting eat alive by bugs. Sadly, no one caught any sharks (what we went fishing for), but there were lots of crabs and sting rays being caught (catch and release)

I didn't workout yesterday and I probably won't today. I'm leaving to go to a wedding out of state on the 6th and won't return until the 15th. So I have been finalizing everything and making sure that everything is packed. Last night I didn't even realize how late it had gotten until I went to find my cellphone and couldn't find it. So finally at about 2:45am I managed to crawl into bed and wake up at 4am to go to work. I'm exhausted, but I did go for a little walk after I finished my shift. Today I had a bagel with cream cheese and a bread twist. And 2 large cups of coffee.

I'm back from my trip :)
While on my trip I got a lot more exercise than I expected to, but I also ate more than I usually do. Usually I will have one or two meals a day and a snack or two in between. While visiting my family I ate three meals a day and rarely had a snack in between the meals (unless a small coffee counts) I sweated like crazy due to the heat. It was 104 when I arrived and then it bounced around from the 80s to the 90s while I was there. I spent a lot of time outside and walking around, and dancing and taking care of my niece; which surprisingly was a lot of exercise since she is very curious, loves to run around and get into things and always wants someone to accompany her (she is turning 2 years old)
I ate home cooked dinners almost every night. I had goulash with rice and veggies. I had meatloaf with mashed potatoes and veggies. I had a cheeseburger and fries (twice) for lunch. For breakfast I mostly had either a croissant or a scone with either a small cup of coffee or milk. I ate a good amount of salad multiple days. I had homemade Chinese food (stir fry, fried rice, egg rolls and teryaki chicken) And I had dessert (brownie sundae) after dinner one night.
I thought that I hadn't lost any weight since I began working out, but I learned something that to me was a bit bitter sweet. I went clothes shopping and if I shop at "big girl" stores I have to get the smallest size and even then it will sometimes be too big for me depending on the cut and article of clothing. If I go to regular clothes stores than I am either a Large or 1x Large (depending on the article of clothing and the cut of it) For skinny jeans I am comfortable in a size 18 once I wash it, for bell bottoms I go for a size 16. I noticed that when trying on jeans my waist was not the problem. Either I would have difficulty getting it to fit over my thighs or it wouldn't fit in my butt area correctly. I also found out that my bra has increased a cup size. I don't really know how that works because when I first lost a good amount of weight my cup size decreased almost 2 cup sizes. But learning that my bra size has increased does explain why I've been having more back pain.
While shopping I found two dresses that I would have NEVER worn before because it shows my arms and it is an empress cut which usually makes me look pregnant. But they both look really nice on me, and I've realized that even though I haven't reached my goal weight or size yet, I'm actually comfortable with my body now. It helps me knowing that I am comfortable with my size now and that I'm just doing this solely because I want to be healthy and not because I want to look good. I'm excited and pumped to keep working out and documenting/watching what I eat more closely.

Today I fast walked 4 miles in 1 hour and 24 minutes with a coworker. She usually walks that route everyday for her workout but she hates that her workout buddies constantly bail on her and when they do show up, they can't keep up. I kept up and even passed her in some parts, but we both enjoyed it and on Wednesday we will do the same route, hopefully we will eventually get it down to jogging and then running and hopefully we will be able to go for longer and longer distances. So I figure that whenever we don't work together than I will do my workout video at home, and since a girl at work is leaving and my boss told me that I will most likely be working some of her days, it means a bigger paycheck and more days of my coworker and I doing the route. Here's to hoping :)
