My advice is that if you want to lose weight, you should track calories and reduce your consumption. It's pretty basic, but there are two key points:

(1) Exercise is not as powerful for weight loss as eating less. Exercise is good for you, but for other reasons. To lose weight you should put your efforts into eating less.
(2) Calorie counting is difficult to do long-term. You need to simplify it if you want to be able to keep doing it. See and

I've constructed a simplified calorie counter based on these points and baked it into a free iPhone App called Pertinacity (pertinacity.org).

I've used it to lose 20 pounds, a friend has lost 9 pounds so far, and a stranger on the Internet has lost 6 pounds so far. :)
