Muscle Growth and Caloric Intake

Hello,

I've read that in order to stimulate muscle growth, caloric intake must be increased.

However, in my case I don't think that would be the case, since I already have a "spare tire" that I'm trying to get rid of.

I'm male, 5'8", 33 and 180lbs.

My goal is to get rid of said spare tire and gain some muscle (not Mr. Olympia like).

I'm planning to up my cardio and do some lifting. I'm not planning to up my caloric intake because of my desire to get rid of the spare tire. As a matter of fact I'm thinking that lowering my caloric intake would be more beneficial.

I'm I going about this correctly?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

You need to make a decision on what you wanna do. Either cut (shed fat) or bulk (add lean mass) and adjust your calories accordingly. Once you hit your goal doing either, you can adjust your calories and do the opposite. Unless you are very large and new to weight lifting to start, hit is very hard to add lean muscle and drop fat at the same time. It can be done, but it is a slow tedious process.

If you don't lift now, my suggestion is to drop your calories to a very small deficit, say 10-20% below your maintenance level (at 180, this is around 2700, so shooting for 2200-2400 cals) and see what happens.

Being overweight + detrained = magic, so you might well drop fat and gain muscle.
