Muai Thai or Jiu-Jitsu? And what's the best training program?

I finally got the possibility to learn a martial art and I was going to learn Krav Magá but that's out of the question for the moment (due to the gym that has it being very far) so I have to choose between Muai Thai or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The problem is that I don't know which is better for me.

I am 17 years old, 1,74cm tall and 76kg weight (which I need to drop but that won't be a problem when I start training, seeing as I gain the weight easily if I stop doing any physical activity but I lose very quickly when I stop it). Even though I am a little overweight, I am still fast and agile (not as much as before). I see myself mostly as a striker (at least that's what it looks like, from my previous battles) but I would like to learn other methods of fighting as well.

After I choose a martial art, I want to establish a training program for the weekends and afternoons/nights when I don't have classes, where I can gain endurance and lose weight/gain muscle (I know both are impossible to do at the same time). The only problem is that I don't know what should I work on specifically, how often should run, jump rope, etc. So I am asking if someone could pinpoint me to where I could learn on what is necessary in a training regime for martial arts where I can see the most improvement the quickest.

I don't know if I made my point clear, if not, please tell me so and I'll to try to explain it better.

Thanks in advance,
Nando

When you start doing any Martial art you have to choose the one that will suit you best, or else you will not enjoy the process of actually getting past the beginning stages of training. (You will get your ass kicked a lot early on but that is ok) Now I do both Muay Thai and BJJ and more of a high impact strength and speed Martial Art while BJJ is a low impact technique based (there is a million techniques and a million more to be found) Martial Art. You will need a lot of endurence for both. Also Muay Thai is purely strikeing using your legs, knees, elbows and fists while BJJ is submission grappling with some Judo and Wrestling mixed. Judging by what you have already stated I think you would enjoy doing Muay Thai the most so that is what I suggest you start doing. Although I highly recommend doing BJJ as well, if you can. No matter which one you choose just remember it ok to suck the first little (we all did!) so don't get discouraged and always give it you all!

Obviously, I like Muay Thai, and am engaged to a BJJ NoGi Competitor. I don't think you can even compare the two. They have almost NOTHING in common. If you're looking for a workout, Muay Thai training is exponentially more aerobic. On the other hand, there is a world of knowledge to be gained from BJJ. It's all about your preference.
