MrVee's Exercise Resource Thread

This is just going to be an introductory post. I'm about 28 months in and have lost close to 200 pounds with a heavy emphasis on exercise. I've spent a lot of time researching the best ways to accomplish my goals, so I figured I'd post a bunch of stuff I learned, resources and things of that nature. I can't vouch for the accuracy of everything I post, but I will link to everything so you can make up your own mind.

Some helpful workout items to start:

  • Cross training shoes, preferably newish. It really is important to have a solid base underneath you.
  • A heart rate monitor. A lot of info I post will be usable with one of these. You don't _have_ to have one but they are neat.
  • A workout notebook. Particularly if you're going to resistance train it helps to track how much you're lifting and how many reps.
  • If you go to a gym, obviously a gym bag and a lock of some sort would be good, as would a clean towel.
  • It seems ridiculous to have to mention this, but ALWAYS wear athletic socks underneath your shoes.
  • Some sort of pain relief/anti-inflammatory item. Whether it's aspirin or ibuprofen or Tylenol or something more natural, if things start to ache and swell, this stuff can help.
  • Finally whether at the gym or not, you need to wear appropriate workout clothes to maximize what you get out of your workout. You don't have to go crazy with compression wear or all sorts of high tech stuff, but wear things that are comfortable to move around in. For guys: shorts and t-shirts/tank tops/tunics work just fine. Women probably know better than I would what to wear to keep everything in place and reduce discomfort, so do so.

More to come.

I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks for finding another way to contribute to the WLF community!
