Moony's Diary

I've been working out for about a month solid now. I've probably taken off 9 days out of the whole month, which is good for me since previously the longest I've ever stuck with a workout is two weeks. But the really frustrating thing, is that I'm working hard and not losing any weight. I don't understand. I haven't really changed my eating all that much, but if it was the same, and I added exercise, you'd think you'd still lose something. It's just really annoying to be working hard and not have any concrete evidence of your progress. My clothes are somewhat baggier, but when I try and go get a new pair of pants, I'm the same size.. I guess you could say I'm in a rut and it's only my first month. I wanted to have lost at least 1/2 by March, and it's looking like I'm not going to be able to do it..

i think that maybe youre just toning your body rather than losing weight.
what exercise programme are you following and how many calories are you taking in (on average) per day?
anyhow welcome to weight loss forum :)

Usually I do about half an hour of cardio. I switch it up between treadmill and elliptical. But sometimes I use some of the weight machines too, I had a meeting with a personal trainer and she showed me some stuff how to not bulk up. But I'm not sure how many calories. It's probably aroun 1,800kcal per day.

well if you are interested in tracking your calorie intake vs calorie output then you could try
i know its used by loads of people on this site - including moi

Can I ask what she showed you? Bulking is about eating more than you burn, not lifting weights. Im curious to know was demonstrated for you.

I would also do the fitday thing for a couple days to find your calorie average to see where you're at. You would think exercise is all you need, but actually diet is the weight eliminator.

She showed me quite a bit with the big round ball. A way to do crunches with it, and exercise for your stomach where you sit down hold the ball and go from one side to the other with the ball. There's an exercise where I walk up the stairs with a medicine ball and bring it forward as I take a step up - skipping every other step. Then when you get to the top you just walk down holding the ball over your head. There were a few machines but I can't even think of what they're called. One's a seated row. I'll try the calorie thing. Seems like it might be a good solution since I'm exercising regularly.

Moony, when I started, I was only watching what I ate, and lost 7 lbs. When I incorporated exercise into the equation, I gained 2 lbs back, but noticed that I was able to fit into some things better than what I used to be. It was really frustrating at first, until I saw that I was able to fit into these things better. I also started watching the scale that I have, which I'm sure is not 100% accurate, but it gives weight, fat, water, and muscle, and I noticed the fat # decreasing and the muscle # increasing.

My doctor also told me that I'd gain weight before losing because of the exercise. So, since you are probably building muscle, and muscle burns more calories than fat, you will be able to burn more in the long run. Keep up the good work, it WILL pay off!!!

There are alot of factors that go into temporary weight gain/loss when beginning exercise. Dont let it get you down, think about what will happen in the next month, or couple weeks. Day to day thinking just makes people upset.

Anyways, what type of exercise do you enjoy? Strength training, running, swimming, etc?

My favorite is swimming, but I'm too embarrassed right now to do it. Ultimately, once I get into better shape, I want to do swimming almost exclusively. I did swim team for about a year and a half, was in the best shape of my life so far. It was so much fun! But I've come to enjoy running too, but that's sort of a .. "I sorta feel like running today" thing. Not something I'd feel like doing all the time.

Hopefully you're right photocrazed.. I really need to work on my diet. I'm trying to consciously think about it, but things keep coming up. I don't want a diet, I want a permanent way of eating.

Luckily for me.. I now have a friend who is also in a similar situation. So we're both going to the gym together now. Which is really exciting. I truly believe that a big goal like this is more attainable when you have a friend to do it with. I'm so excited :) Still haven't lost anything, but I feel so much better..

Yes.. from 200 to 199! It's not much but let me tell ya. My friend and I had a killer idea!

She and I are having a competition. We both weigh basically the same and want to lose the same amount so.. The person who loses the most by June 1st gets treated to a new outfit by the other and then we'll both go out for a movie or something. Then.. the first person to lose 50lbs wins the competition. It's been a lot of fun so far. I'm so excited!

i did that with a friend, too!!

the friendly competition made a huge difference... made it fun and motivating! i was sad when she stopped, because it really helped! i'm sure it will help you both out!

you will do fine, and a huge congrats on your pound loss! you have to celebrate all those victories!
