but that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about.
it's one thing to be healthy and another to be fat.
the two aren't explicitly correlated. you can be fat and still be fairly healthy.
for example, Oprah is healthy but she's not paper thin. she's still got some fat on her. but that's the size her body is comfortable with.

what the media and society does is make people think they have to be paper thin. but people can be healthy and still be in a range of sizes. and all this populates into is a disparity of what our ideal body is as told to us by society and our real body. there's too much focus I think on just losing weight. The most important thing is to get healthy. If that means losing a few pounds first, that's fine. But if you can run 5km and not break a sweat and you're just naturally big, that's fine too.

also it doesn't help that society is throwing images at people telling them they aren't good enough. so we're fat, so what? we're people too. and we're here. what we need is images of men and women of all body types in media more saying it's okay to be whatever age, whatever body type. so everyone can feel more comfortable with their body and OTHER people can start learning to be more comfortable with other people's bodies. cause they gotta start dealing.

that's why I think this is a great video. :)

I don't really see the connection between being healthy and being fat. Of course, it depends on what we mean by "fat." For me, I understand fat to mean obese or close to it. There is nothing positive about this. I don't feel good about my joint pain, sleep apnea, and greater chance of developing heart problems, arthritis, diabetes, and cancer.

I am not saying the fat people are bad people. I just can't get over the feeling the calling for fat positive imagery in the media is like calling for smoking positive imagery. I remember when there was virtually no public place you could go without having to deal with everyone's second hand smoke. There was a massive and very successful campaign to reduce smoking in the US with understanding that the diseases caused by smoking were a threat to the collective health of the nation. I would like to see a similar campaign to fight obesity. Let there be a nation-wide mobilization to educate people to the dangers of obesity, to encourage people to take control of their bodies, their health, and of their very lives.

Again, this is not a question of morality or judgement but rather one of health. Unless my understanding of the health risks of being fat are wrong, and please correct me if it is, fat postive imagery is not in the interest of public health.

Well.. this is food for thought, I weighed 230 lbs and I was perfectly healthy according to my doctor. I was obese.. but my body was still healthy. Funny eh?

Avi, why have you gone through the trouble to lose weight? Did you feel good at 230lbs?

there are some correlation to fat and health but it's not completely underlined if you're fat then you're unhealthy. and taking up a campaign to educate people about healthy living is one thing which I think is a great idea.

what I wanna stress is that fat positive imagery is not about making the idea of fat good. but more about accepting people who ARE fat. I'm taking about media that beats down overweight people. and not even very overweight people. but people who may just be 30 or 40 pounds overweight. I'm taking about images you see on tv every day that shows you image that fat people are lazy slobs that don't do anything and just eat. Have you ever noticed that the overweight people in the TV shows are usually the comic relief? That they're the butt of the jokes? Or the goofball in the group of friends? When was the last time you saw a fat person as a lead for a non-comedy role in TV? I really can't think of any. They're always portrayed badly. This is fat negativity. This only promotes stereotypes. And makes people who are overweight feel even worse about themselves. if media can show more images of people in different sizes, races, ethnicities, I'm fairly certain there'd be alot less stereotyping in this world.

that's why this video is great. here is a fat positive image with plus sized women who are having fun, who are sexy, who's doing EXACTLY the same thing Beyonce and her dancers do.

Does anyone feel good at 230 lbs?

No, I didn't. Physically I have always been strong.. but I was tired alot.. lazy.. I couldn't go for hikes without getting winded... or red in the face and feeling like I am gonna burn up. I didn't like the way I looked, it depressed me... and I felt like when i entered a room everyone looked at me. I had little self confidence.. to do anything even things not reguarding exercise.

Losing weight was the best thing ever.

I am glad to see that you have lost as much as you have, especially since it is amount the same amount that I am striving for.

I had exactly the same problem with hiking. Hiking is now my main form of exercise but I generally do it alone right now. I am still too slow to be socially acceptable, I am afraid.

I hope to be following in your footsteps. I am on a bit of a plateau for the moment but I hope that will end soon.
