Moldy Bread?!

So I've been eating these yummy sprouted 7-grain rolls from Trader Joes lately. Well I just opened up the bag this morning to find every roll all green and white with mold The sell-by date is tomorrow! It really stinks because I had to throw them out. I'm happy I've found a bread that is so low carb but now I'm scared to buy them again because I can't afford to throw food out (I'm really broke). Any ideas on why they might've gotten moldy? I kept them wrapped up pretty well too.

Oh, and is there any danger in eating bread that has a little bit of mold on it? Just wondering for future reference :)

yeah, i am pretty sure (someone please correct me if i am wrong) that mold on bread is the most dangerous. However, i do think you can cut it off if its just a tiny bit.

Also, if the sell by date was tomorrow, and you arent afraid to do this: try taking it back to trader joe's. Tell them you are a loyal customer, love the bread, but cant afford to keep buying it if thats whats gonna happen!!! They will probably give you something for free :p

also, where do you keep your bread? Some speciality bread is better refrigerated. And my roomates and i learned 2 weeks ago (after a year of living there), that the top of the refrigerator is NOT a good place to store veggies and bread! We learned this after one of my friend's mom saw our onion plant...my onioin had grown some beautiful thick, green leaves...it was so pretty that we just let it keep growing for a few months :)

keep a few out in ziploc bags and put the rest in the fridge or freezer. Thaw out a few hours before eating in the baggies so they won't get crusty . Don't store your bread near windows, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, or the fridge. Makes it go bad real fast.

alot of times when my bread is out on the countertop and I get some out and it has that wierd 'beer' smell like its gonna be molds REAL soon, I either toast it and just cut off the mold before toasting if its just a few splotches or so on the bottom or something like that sounds nasty but its alright. I have to use what I got too with the lack of $ I totally understand but don't start buying that white crap its horribley non-nutritive.

I wouldn't eat it..

But.. went camping last year with a group of friends.. about 1 in the morning we started cooking steaks on the fire and making steak sandwiches.. I bet well had 2 or 3 of those things.

In the morning (and light outside), we were getting out the rest of the loaf and low and behold.. the bread was SOLID DARK GREEN. I am not talking spots here, I am talking more mold then bread!

Currently, we are all still living and none of us got sick.

This is the solution I use - I freeze all my bread and either toast it or nuke it in the microwave to defrost. One loaf usually lasts me a month or so (I dont eat much bread) so, it would go very mouldy before that!

LoL, well, after those cases of beer we drank, anything tasted good.

Moulds, every where.........

There would be several reasons for your bread moulds, Firstly...dont get suprised to know that those moulds exist in the air in your house, thats how mostly they get transmitted they just float, they try to sit on anything that comes their way, they breed on places favourable, which gives them moist and warm temp. SO if you are seeing a mould that means there are many surrounding it which cant be seen with your naked eye.

So I would'nt cut the mould part and eat the rest..I would rather throw it away.

If you have a sell by date tomorrow and if the pack is still unopen or unsed, u can return it any time, I know this as I used to work for 7'11 stores in AUS. we used to return them to the supplier for credit, thats easy.

If the pack if open and part of it is used, it depends on the sales person or the manager.

You can reduce the number of moulds in your house by following some of the tips I know (read some where):

- Clean your A/C filter regularly or change it depending on ur model

- vacc carpets regularly

- Look for damp places at corners and work it out.

- Dont leave any thing thats wet for too long, including a wet cloth, try to get it dried after you use it.

- Dont wait to change your bin liner untill its full.

- Foods shouldnt be exposed

Like wise....just clean..keep it clean. All this doesnt guarantee you to have your bread healthy, just tips to minimise :)

oh right!
yeah that sounds like a munchy-desperation to me ! oh man. that has to be the worst case of desperate munchies I've heard in my life next to eating individual packets of really old condiments from various fast food restraunts....uh that would be mine...lol.

Oakley-Taking your advice; I ain't eating it!

Xtacy-Thanks for all the tips!

jungle- Holy crap that was funny to read. You really had me rolling there. I like to camp and from now on I'll have to shin a flashlight on bread when it's dark.

Jaymie-Old condi packets? Oh man, please tell me you were under the influence of something :p

Thanks guys and gals. I'll be keeping half in the fridge for now on.

 uh yeah I think it was the post buzz-kill from some alcohol !

Which is why I don't like drinking very much, the crap spikes my blood sugar so much I would probably sprinkle sugar on dirt and eat it when I got the despo-munchies!

hmm..that reminds me of my best friends Pregnancy cravings...she used to have insatiable cravings for DIRT and GASOLINE. She said she could just feel the grittiness of the sand in her mouth and she just wanted to start shoving sand in her mouth!!

Come to find out she had a really bad iron and mineral defficiency!

Are you serious? How does one crave that, I've never had dirt or gasoline lol

I have no friggin idea !

She was all like " I just wanna put a mouthful of sand in my mouth!" and "I just wanna drink the gas every time we go to the gas station!"

When I used to go to WIC for my like..food vouchers..they would ask me this every time on the survey deal ... "do you ever have cravings for dirt or sand?" One day I got curious and asked the lady.."Why do yall ask this question? I mean, if I say yes, are you going to write me food stamps for dirt and sand??"

she laughed at me and then told me about the mineral defficiency that causes people to crave things that contain a certain mineral...even though you may not conciously KNOW that the mineral is even in there. REally wierd,

Um, I heard about that! I also heard that many of the cravings are for... dirt, bricks, paper and metal! I believe it's called pica, and yes, it is usually caused by a mineral deficiency- so if you ever get the urge to make some mud pies and sprinkle them with brick chips, start popping those vitamins ;o)

About the bread- I'm the only one in my family that eats 100% whole grain bread, so it used to go moldy all the time before I could even eat half the loaf! I started storing half the loaf in the fridge and the other half in the freezer. The refrigerated bread was good for normal sandwiches and would last about 2 1/2 weeks. The frozen was great for toast and grilled sandwiches, but tasted a little funny if I only defrosted it first.
