Mission six pack

I joined the forum to get some inspiration about the whole weight loss thing .. To have something to post and to proof myself I need to do something, I went to the doctor today for a checkup, including blood ..

His first assassment : In short : OMG - in long :

I have 286 lbs with 6.04 which makes it a BMI of 38 which is officially obese :(

Oh my - I knew I am overweight - I know it was a lot - but to be called obese is something I did not expect. The worst part : My dad had a heart attack with age 42 which does not really help me :(

Bloodpreasure ? Up to the roof .. I have a blood preasure of 150/100 which is deadly for my families history of heart attacks ...

I have to wait until Wednesday for the blood results which I will post here of course ..

Now whats next ? I think I go with the way I went in the past ...

My diet plan was a mix between Weightwatchers and simply eating less. Why Weightwatchers ? I never been to a meeting nor did I ever used their online services. I won't and will not count points, for that I simply don't have the WW knowledge. We don't even have a meeting in our country ..

But why do I mention it ? Simple - since at least 60% ( if not more ) of the poeple of Gibraltar are overweight, they (as in grocery stores) have a HUGE collection of WW menus ... Believe it or not - they are so great that even people from my company eating that stuff, not to lose weight, but simply they are tasty .. I went through all makes of Chicken Tikka Masala - they all suck - EXCEPT the WW thing ...

Since the WW menus are intend for weightloss, I will continue eating this stuff ..

First off I am not a "5 times a day" eater - I simply cannot do it .. tried it and faild.. So I go with the three meal approach :

Breakfast : Bowl of Wheetstuff (no suggar, just wheetabit) with milk, slice of bread
Lunch : One WW meal
Dinner : Fruits .

When I check the calories of everything together I will hit something like 1000 calories .. which is ok - I THINK (correct me if I am wrong please) ..

My problem is that I am living 2 minute walk away from my company - so I have to find the time to walk. I am living in the 5th floor - First thing I did after the doc : taking the stairs instead the lift ...

So, starting as from today ! Lets go ...

Welcome to the forum! I am only a newbie here myself! I'm sorry to say at this point in time I don't really have any helpful suggestions! Good luck with your weightloss and congratulations on taking the stairs!!

Keep it Going!

Good luck on your journey UTW - you are right, carrying on without doing anything about it is going to bring poor health and early death!

The first month is the hardest - because you have to create your own motivation - later you start to appreciate the results - feel better - and living healthier slowly becomes habitual. So try hard to stick with it because it will be worth it - you are the master of your own destiny.

Walking and stair climbing is a great exercise - my dog makes sure that I don't skip daily walking, whatever the weather. Walk more, get fitter, and if you are able to, it can later develop into a jogging routine.

One word of advice - be careful how 'less' you eat, and later, consider trying to wean yourself off of the processed / ready meals. Don't starve yourself - its not the best way to lose the fat.

Welcome to the forum :)

I completely agree with TF, don't starve yourself and use this time to get use to eating and preparing food in your caloric range. The problem with diets is that if you go 'off' of them, or don't have the WW meals at the ready, you won't necessarily know what or how much to eat, which is one reason weight often comes back on after someone diets.

Good for you for taking control!!
You can reach your goals :D

Omg

OMG ... look at the date :( What a LOOONG time ...

I was struggling for a long time, job, family wise etc. ... I know .. its not an excuse, but doesn't really make things easier ...

One incident changed me completely and it finally made "click" in my head. The last male family member finally had his first heart attack age 45 ... I am 32 now and scare to hell ... When we came back from hospital on the 2nd / January I decided "Thats it"... its a shame that I needed such an incident .. but I think I am "there" now.

From that day (New Years) I stopped drinking completely .. I was on several birthdays and other celebrations and had only Diet Coke, Water and other sugar free drinks ..

Beside that I am on a Weight Watchers diet too. WW is for me the so far best diet I ever did .. also because of the amount of different food supplements you can buy here. There are almost more different frozen meals from WW than other stuff ...

Anyway, as I said, I started on the 1st of January

High : 6 feet
Starting Weight : 297 lbs
Goal Weight : 187 - 200 lbs
Current Weight : 283.8 lbs :D

I am really happy since I don't even want to drink a beer and I actually like the feeling right now .. The feeling to have actually fun in losing weight since the results speak for itself ...

So .. My goal is to lose the weight until the end of the year

I was also browsing today through the forums and people seem to ask a lot about excess skin and how it looks .. I mean yes, IF I really have a lot of excess skin I probably would consider surgery or something .. but thats not important right now ...

For all weight-lo(o)ser : Just ask yourself, what is better, excess skin which you cannot even see dressed, or a belly button surrounded by 200 packs of butter... yes, it doesn't look nice but damn, obese or over weight doesn't either ... :)

Seems your doing ok then losing the weight you have from 297 to 284.

Are you drinking a lot of water? if not - DO!

Alcohol causes a reduction in metabolism - so since your doing well staying off the beer (full of fat and yeast) i'd say keep to it!

You say you live a short walk from your work? so that means you dont have travelling time (like me - 1 hour per day) and also you can go home for lunch even? where you can prepare a better meal than what you could take you work perhaps? you should really have a lot of free time throughout the day to do at least half hour of exercise?? (i know you obviously have commitmens, family, children maybe etc) but people CAN find time ;)

The more often you eat, the more you put your body into a metabolic state. you say you can only eat 3 meals a day - i dont see how (under any circumstances!) if you ate 6 meals - remember that each of thos meals are half the size of the original 1 meal you would have had - technically you should be spending the same amount of time eating 3 full meals as you would eating 6 half sized meals. - but with the added benefit of the increase in your metabolism.

For me, the word DIET is quite bad (when it means you've chnaged your eating habits over a certain period to lose wieght)

IMO, you need a change of LIFESTYLE to lose weight effectively and easily.

If you change to eating food 'X' because it has less fat or is smaller etc and know in your mind that it is for 'x' amount of time.. then when the time comes that you have reached your goal (and would hope you do) then what? well most previously obese/overweight people will have it in their heads that they have fulfilled their mission and can now go back to the way they did eat...!

the change of LIFESTYLE that i would promote is to ask yourself what you know you SHOULD actually be eating on a daily basis to be a fit, healthy person. Once you've answered that questions honestly, you then know what yuo should be eat... FOREVER! not for 2 weeks, not for 3 months.. but for the rest of you life - hence, it is a lifestyle change.. which has a major bi product - you lose weight... and keep it off! :)

hope some of what i have wrote here helps you or anyone else that may read this ;)

Welcome back! Hope you come a little more often than you did before!!:D

Oh yea :) :) For SURE

Nice Tips

Thanks for that :) :) I know I have to change my habits. A colleague is some sort of food expert / health guru etc. He used to teach etc. and he will watch me so he said :D

Weight Watchers is / was a way for me to start .. I cannot simply change my habits over night of course .. But I had to act right now, therefore the mainstream Diet .. And yes, diet is a horrible word .. but at the end sad but true ...

One thing I do have to get into is exercise .. this is harder than stop eating / drinking .. I actually HATE jogging / walking even though the area here is made for it (up the hill, down the hill) ..

What I am wondering, if people talking here in the forums about walking, what do you guys mean ? Do you mean like jogging or just walk a normal pace like you go to get a newspaper (you know what I mean LOL ) or a mix in between ?

I have to wear out my ipod at some point I thinK :)

for actually FAT lose, walkin at past pace is best. you wont use quite as many cals for energy as you will if you were running, but the actual cals you do use while walking fast will come more from your own fat store and not from carbs. Running fast will use up more cals for energy, but a lower % of thos cals will be from the fat on you, so not as much burned off.

so go for a 20 min walk somewhere, an iPod is great. In fact i just though of this now!!!>>> pick you fav songs and put them in a play list that last maby 15 mins ok? put it on, walk out your house and keep walking till the playlist stops! then play it again as your walking back - your songs will be your timing for walking! and it will be a fun way of adding up the mins for you walk ;)
