So, it's time.

I have lurked here and posted a few times over the last year or soandlove looking at you all.

I am a 28 year old teacher in rural southeastern virginia. My story is long, but ill make it as short as possible. Like so many of you, my weight became an issue when i was quite young. at 13 i grew about 8 inches in three months, and thinned out for about 1 year and actually wrestled at 177 in ninth grade. By the time i was a senior my football playing weight was 260 or so, and almost none of it was muscle. I am an athletic guy, always have been, despite my size. i school all my friends in racquetball, and was a standout on my football team in high school.

My problem is: college.

I went to school and without any of my meal decisions being made by others, i blew up to over 300 pounds. By the time i began teaching, i was in the 330's. I met some people that encouraged me to get healthy and i actually lost about 65 pounds and got to 270 and was actually moderately happy at just under 6' tall. i stayed that way for nearly two years, but have recently put on about 35 pounds. I got back into coaching football and it has made me lazy physically and my eating habits have followed suit. I hated cooking at 7 after practice and started relying on microwave meals, frozen pizzas and fast food, all of which i love.

Anyway, right now i am at right around 300 pounds, i was 306 on monday but have gotten back on the horse and few pounds have fallen of quickly as a change from 4000 calories to 1500 or so is rather dramatic.

I have a number of goals. Most of them are not numeric. I want to wear size 36 jeans and xl t-shirts, (currently stretching in my 40's from when i was 270 and poured into most of my xxl shirts) I want to be able to wear a shirt purchased from hollister or abercrombie.
I want to hit on a woman under 180 pounds and not get laughed at. sounds so bad but i dont care. I have next to zero interest in women because i dont want them to see me naked, and the ones that dont mind, i dont want to see them naked lol. again, understand this kind of makes me sound like a total prick, but its the way i feel. I want to fit on all the roller coasters at busch gardens. I want to fit in my student desks in my classroom. i want to be comfortable on an airplane.

Numerically, id love to be in the 220's. I think under 200 is a bit too lofty,i like food too much and really dont aspire to be thin and ultra fit, just thinner and healthier.

My short term goal is to lose enough by the time my parents visit halloween time that they notice it. That means probably 15-20 pounds by then. i think that is a lot in six weeks, but attainable.

im going to be counting calories and try to keep them under 2000. i started a journal on one of the calorie counting sites to keep abreast of where my intake is. so far this week ive averaged 1300, but that is less then i want actually. I was a bit sick on tuesday and only had 900 or so, which brought down the average. an example of daily intake has been weight control oatmeal for breakfast, ham sand. on low carb wheat bread and a yogurt/banana for lunch, and a variety of things for dinner including a low fat chicken chili i made yesterday. if i want a snack, i have a pickle or a yogurt.

I am going to las vegas for spring break, and would love to have lost 50 by then.

My dream look would be difficult to pin down really, so ill just say, a smaller version of me.

thanks for checking this out. ill be updating im sure.

So it has been 16 days since i started up again and have done well. ive been trying to keep my caloric intake somewhat eratic, ranging from as low as 1200 to as high as 2400. I treat myself to one somehwat cheat a week, but keep in sensible, not outrageous, for instance this week i had some chinese, no rice, just sweet and sour chicken and a little bit of general tso's. I figured it to be around an 800 calorie meal, as opposed to the 400-500 calories ones i have been having.
Anyway, i have lost 13 pounds in 16 days, which is a great start, but i realize that i cant lose that much so quickly throughout the journey. I have been pretty strict in my ways and know long term i wont be. I havent had a beer, pizza or tasty snack since i started and know that will change. My activity level is also very high right now as i coach high school football, which is 3 hours on my feet chasing around high schoolers, yelling, swearing and sweating in the heat, which burns a good deal of calories im sure. Once that is over, ill have to work harder to maintain my activity level, or else my weight loss will slow to a crawl.

My goal this wee is to lose 3 pounds by next monday. Till Then

Hi there, and welcome.

1300 calories is way too little for someone your size. You may be losing quickly that way but it will come back and bite you.
Ideally you want to eat as much as you can and still lose weight at a reasonable rate.

I suggest looking around this forum and reading the various sticky threads in the different sections. They will give you good grounding in sensible and effective weight loss strategies.

2-3 pounds per week is a good rate of loss for someone your size.

One thing I heartily recommend is using an online calorie calculator like FitDay.com to track your food intake.

Weightlifting is actually great exercise, and helps you maintain muscle mass which you otherwise lose while dieting. Alternate lifting days with cardio days. Start off walking if you want, that's fine. You'll probably find, as I did, that as you lose weight you will want to do more intense workouts.

The sports stuff is great - exercise is easier if you are having fun, right? Racquetball sounds easy as you only have to scrounge up one other person. :)

Remember that diet is key here. Exercise is critical for health and muscle maintenance, but your diet is the thing that will lose the weight, primarily. And, as you have already realised (but it bears reinforcing), you don't 'go on a diet', because that implies you will go off the diet eventually. The idea is that you are making permanent changes to your way of life. You want to build healthy eating habits that will stay with you.

Congrats on your weight loss so far, and I look forward to seeing your continued success in the future.

i have been using my-calorie-counter.com to keep track of daily caloric intake. my average for the sixteen days is 1776 a day (ironic as i am a history teacher, right!)

I have thyroid issues and my diet has been set up by my doctor. He wants me around 2000 a day, so i need to step it up a bit, probably add a mid morning snack as breakfast is at 7 and lunch at 1230.

I have a pretty good grasp on what is healthy and what isnt, but in practice it is all kind of hard to keep track of. It gets to be 9 oclock and i put in my food for the day and realize that im under wherei should be, well im not gonna go eat another meal then.

anyway, thanks for the input and encouragement.

1776 - some sort of colonial rebellion, as I recall. :) Doesn't have the same meaning up here...

What you might want to do is up your protein intake. Most guys don't have a big problem eating more meat. :)
As long as you make good choices, of healthy lean meats, you can up your calorie intake while increasing your protein, which is important when losing weight.

Just an idea.
