Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories a day

After he retires from swimming, Michael Phelps might want to try his hand at competitive eating. The Olympic star recently said he consumes 12,000 calories per day, or 9,500 more than the FDA recommends for an active, young male.

Phelps has to keep his intake up in order to compensate for all the calories he burns during the 30-hours per week he spends in training. He told NBC that an average day might have the following menu:

Breakfast: 3 fried egg sandwiches, 2 cups coffee, 5-egg omlette, bowl of grits, 3 pieces of french toast, 3 chocolate chip pancakes

Lunch: 1 pound pasta, 2 ham and cheese sandwiches, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Dinner: 1 pound pasta, 1 large pizza, energy drink (1,000 calorie)

Three years ago, Phelps told an interviewer:

I eat pretty much whatever I want. I don't have a strict diet. It's all about cramming in as many calories into my system as I possibly can. To be honest with you, I have a tough time keeping weight on.

Michael better be careful there. There's no surer way to turn new female fans into former female fans than by complaining about how hard it is to keep on weight.

I read that earlier today. Still can't get my head around it. That is an insane amount of calories/food. He will struggle once he stops training!

I heard this a few days ago...that's insane. I can't even comprehend eating half of that. I eat a quarter of that and it's enough to get stronger for me.

I heard that today, too! Hard to imagine eating that much in a single day, much less every single day!

Imagine the metabolism on that guy--23 y/o champion...wow!

That's even more than the daily intake of Tour de France cyclists, given at around 7,000 calories per day:

Christ....I thought I could down some food. See, I COULD eat that much, but I don't have as big a bank roll as that guy, lol.

Kinda goes against all the "diet is everything" guys on here eh? He's about as pinnacle of health as you get.

On a side note, I remember after he set the 400m WR a couple days ago, and had to swim a couple hours later, the first comments out of his mouth after getting that Gold was "I've gotta go get some more calories in my body...". Awesome.

He doesn't have one...he just eats everything in sight that he likes.

Pretty close to the same article, but not:

"It's been pretty much pizza and pasta every lunch and dinner for the last four or five days, so probably gonna keep on the routine," Phelps told Access Hollywood's Billy Bush.

But he does plan on changing his eating routine at some point.

"And then after that [I'll] just have some McDonalds," he said.

Yeah...McDonalds and Pizza aren't exactly the most healthy things out there for somebody to stay in shape. in another article, it says he loads his ham and cheese sandwiches with "loads of Mayo..."

In his situation, it doesn't matter if he eats junk food. He needs calories, and he can get those calories more easily from junk foods. Imagine trying to down 12,000 calories of oatmeal, veggies, eggs, and chicken.

And I don't think anyone is questioning his health, with the amount of exercise he does he can eat w/e he wants and still probably have a healthier heart than any of us.

Yeah, I was thinking about that...the amount of activity is amazing (swimming training). I know I'm nowhere near the physical exertion training he's at, but I seem to suffer the same "problem" as him...hard gainer, and eat whatever is in front of me. This link suggests he only really eats about 6K:

The Olympic Diet of Michael Phelps

Granted I don't eat in that excess, but I used to literally work 6am-3pm, go ride BMX/trials/trails for 5 hours minimum, then go breakdance from from about 9 or 10pm to 1am...rinse and repeat the next day, 7 days a week. That was, until I had a kid, and my schedule changed :bncry: It was ridiculously fun while it lasted.

 Holy moly that's a LOT of calories!!! But, I guess I can believe it because imagine how many he burns doing his training, and then the actual competitions? He probably also has a super fast metabolism.

Somebody said it right here, he's going to struggle once he finally stops swimming.

I dont see it as a lot of calories considering what he does.

And, its only natural for the calorie needs to reduce if activities reduce. In addition, his metabilism will slow down over time (as activities reduce) and as he normally ages.

Best wishes
